When ever I think about meat or cheese, I remember this quote: “The taste of a meal lasts 20 minutes, the satisfaction of saving an animal lasts a life time.” If you keep educating yourself about animal rights and vegetarianism, it will become easier and easier. If you slip up, don’t let that be an excuse to quit all together. Remember why you became a vegetarian, and all the good your doing ! Best of luck !
It’s only hard when you say it is. Just make the conscious decision every time you eat to not pick up meat products. It’s that simple. Every bite makes a difference to you, the planet, and the animals who thank you for not eating them that day.
1. It usually takes a week or two for your brain to get used to the tastes of new foods, and to stop caring so much about the tastes of old foods. So just remember that it gets easier as time passes.
2. Continue to remind yourself of what meat actually is and of how much pain, suffering, illness and death is associated with it.
3. If you’re getting strong cravings that are making you seriously consider eating some meat, just get some mock meat products instead (veggie burgers, veggies dogs, veggie ribs, veggie jerky, etc.). If you can’t find a particular mock meat product in a store near you, order online and you’ll have it soon enough.
4. If you stumble, don’t allow it to serve as an excuse to give up. Just put yourself back on track and keep going.
Hey, congrats! Don’t worry, it get’s easier. Just stay strong, eat great veg food, remember the animals, and reap benefits! Stay healthy, keep your nutrients balanced, and have fun. (I burn incense when my family cooks bacon, I don’t like the smell at all, so that can help.) Encourage your family to have some nice veg meals with you, and good luck!
I’m the only vegan in my family but hey, after over seven years of not eating meat my Dad (who even lives in another province) who loves fishing and hunting recently went pollotarian (has now been for over a month) so do not think you cannot end up making a difference.
Remember that the feeling of satisfaction from meat would only last like 10 seconds. After that you would only feel guilt from knowing a lifetime of suffering the animal has gone through for just one meal. Mercy for Animals has a list of vegetarian dishes for ideas if you need ideas on what to eat. Also, if you need a reminder of why you choose to go without meat go to meat.org.
Good job for making the effort! It will become no effort at all with time!
If you ever get tempted with meat products (or a food containing it) just think of how that was once an animal with a beating heart that should never be considered a food at all and how you are standing up for for what you believe in because you know it is the right thing to do. You can do it!
