Something I’ve been seeing a lot of lately in people’s profiles on social networking sites (mainly instagram. I’m a total instagram stalker.) is the statement “I’m a Vegan/vegetarian”
    Like saying they’re both o.O
I don’t really understand, but it instantly pisses me off every time.
    I mean… you could say you’re vegetarian if you’re vegan, I suppose… but you can’t say you’re vegan if you’re vegetarian.
It really makes me think those are the people who have “jumped on the bandwagon” so to speak, and don’t really give two craps. They’re just saying it to be… I don’t know. Freaking hipsters.

    What do you guys think?

I think it is ridiculous there are differences in the two so saying that your both would be kind of….I don’t know the word for it but it makes me mad too. I feel like if they are writing that they probably don’t even know the differences between the two, and they are just saying that because they think it makes them “cool”. I knew a girl in one of my classes who would preach about how she didn’t ever eat meat and she was 100% vegan, next day she was eating a chicken sandwich and when I asked her what happened she said she felt like “taking a break from not eating meat”. That made me so mad!! >:(

It frustrates me to see this as well :( I hate when people claim to be something they’re not, especially a vegetarian or vegan. I’m glad to see they’re aware of these life styles, but they’re doing much more harm than good by living by a double standard. I’m totally with you, pisses me off as well because the treat it like a joke ! Also, if you’d like, follow me on instagram :D miss_seance (I follow back ^.^)

    @Styna

The more people who claim to be vegetarian/vegan, the less stigma there is associated with vegetarianism/veganism and the more mainstream of a choice it becomes.

Sadly, the majority (especially the youth majority) is still heavily affected by popular opinion.
The more people they see switching to a vegetarian/vegan diet, the more likely they are to look into it and give it a try themselves.

    Regarding the cheeseburger-eater specifically:
It is more helpful to the animal rights movement if they list their diet as vegetarian/vegan rather than listing it as meat eater or omnivore (or listing nothing at all).

@nomeatnodairynoproblem if they are secretly eating cheeseburgers everyday, how is that helping the animal rights movement at all?

I agree with @nomeatnodairynoprob1em, even though it does annoy me!

I’m happy to see them jump on the bandwagon.
While they’re on board, there’s a good chance they’ll learn enough truth to keep them there.

I’m also always happy to see people put vegetarian/vegan in their profile.
Even if they’re secretly eating cheeseburgers everyday.
I don’t mind dishonesty or hypocrisy when it helps the animal rights movement more than it hurts it.
