How often are you guys judged when you tell others you are vegan or vegetarian? Is it really obvious that the person is judging you, or are you just suspicious?
I find I’m frowned upon a lot about the fact that I’m vegan, and have even been told “Oh. You’re one of THEM?!” And the person even took a step back… I was amazed!
What are your stories?
I’m not judged very often but when I am I don’t stand for it. I would worry about trying to tell when people are judging you because they’ll let you know. One time I was at the movies with a friend talking about my dietary choices and a random person jumped in and told me I was wrong and why. It made me ridiculously angry, more than it should have.
@tarynmichelle1 I really hate it when people pull the “circle of life” card on me… because in this day and age, with all of the food choices and variety, we’d all be able to live no problem without meat. It’s not the circle of life anymore…it’s just an excuse, you know?
I totally get the fact that their aren’t many vegans in your area, because it’s like that for a lot of people, unless they live in a big city, like mine. The best way to interact with vegans is through the internet, especially if you live in an area with very few or no vegans. It’s nice because websites like these, you can find people who feel the same about topics as you, and can really understand.
Good luck on your vegan journey!
Most people’s first question is “Why?” They honestly don’t understand my motives, which is fine, so I tell them…but that’s when the judgement/apathy starts. The people who really judge me, though, are the ones that don’t like PETA. I don’t personally know one vegan in my city, my friends/family are all meat eaters, so people are all, “animals have to die so we can eat! You’re gonna get sick and go to the hospital!” It’s irritating, and people’s reactions vary, but coming here and seeing tons of other people dealing with it is encouraging 🙂
@jasmine-lee I totally get what you’re saying. Going to a party can be very difficult, especially when there are people jokingly asking you if you want meat, or even, once, someone shoved some in front of my face. I was beyond grossed out. But usually a stern look in that person’s direction will clear it up really fast!
I personally find this so annoying. I’m really close with all my employee’s at my job and I see them all like family members, but I remember when I first became vegetarian , it’s like they all looked down on me and thought I was super “weird” . Whenever we would have dinner parties, they would always order everything with meat on it and then say “here have some” even though i’ve told them about 3987245 times that I don’t eat meat, it’s like , really? do you listen to anything I say? . But hey, not having enough support, and making it through just makes us stronger, and not eating meat makes us happier! =)
