I’m a fourteen year old girl, and I’ve been vegetarian for two and a half years. I’ve been vegan for almost two weeks. My mother isn’t “allowing” me to, however. I’ve just tried to avoid the discussion and not eat dairy or eggs, but I’ve found it pretty much impossible. She says I can’t grow properly without eggs and dairy. I tried to get her to watch Meet Your Meat, but she refuses. I really don’t know what to do.

I have the same problem. I’ve been vegetarian for about 2 years, but I have an eating disorder so my mom is totally against me cutting out all dairy products. I keep my mouth shut and eat what I want until she thinks I’m loosing too much weight. I usually don’t eat at home anyway, so I can eat what I want, but she gives me a hard time and refuses to listen to anything I have to say about vegetarianism or veganism. /:

My parents are the same way…
With my parents, I’ve found that the best thing to do is just not talk about it or not bring it up because they won’t listen to what I say and arguing goes no where. :(

You could cook her a vegan meal that’s really yummy ask if she likes it and if she says yes you can tell her it’s vegana nd much better than anything made from animal products and also tell her think of how many fruits and veggies you would be eating in place of those other things you would no longer eat!

My parents are the same way, insisting that without eating meat “I cannot grow properly”. Have you introduced your mom to healthier vegan alternatives to milk and cheese (Silk has really tasty almond and soy milk)? Remind her that with removing diary from your life-style, your diet has only gotten healthier! That’s right, consuming cow milk that is originally meant for baby calves is not good for our bodies. Everyone would be much healthier with the vegan alternative. If you ever need support, just seek nice refuge here with us where we completely understand! And, just remember the hundreds of animals you will be saving each year. Be proud that you are vegan, it is an amazing thing! :)

My parents refuse to let me vegetarian because the first time I tried, I got sick. But now they won’t even consider letting me try it again.

My dad was the exact same way when I first became vegetarian. He even yelled at me sometimes for not eating dinner. The best I can say is stock up peanut butter sandwiches and things like that. Try to explain to her that you can still eat a balanced meal, so long as she helps you buy the extra food. If she still refuses, try to cook her some vegan meals and show her that you can still eat well.
    Best of luck!

I had the same problem. It’s a horrible situation to be in :( See if you can make a deal with your mum, ask to be a vegan for so long, and if you’re still healthy (which you should be lol) then you can continue on. Make a deal with her some how. If she still says no, you can still make vegan choices in your life, like when your out with friends, instead of buying, oh I dont know, lets say a carton of milk, get water or juice instead. Little things can add up to something great :) Make your lunches and make them vegan and maybe ask to cook a meal of two for your family every week and make it vegan. I’m sure if you can prove to your mum that your not going to die by going vegan and that you’ll still be healthy, she’ll let you. Good luck !

Show her the information on vrg.org/nutrition . They have detailed articles, cited, about all aspects of a healthy vegan lifestyle. If she still argues after that, then just GO vegan because she’s not being rational, she’s just arguing out of “tradition” of seeing meat, eggs, and milk as healthy.

I went vegan at 16 and in the past 2 and a half years I have been healthier than I have in my entire life, most of my childhood was spent eating disgusting amounts of chicken, fish, cheese and many additional dairy products. I used to have anemia as a child and more severe skin irritations, which I no longer have.

You can google about vegan athletes and use them as examples of why veganism is a healthy and balanced choice.

ok, so. I have the same problem. Ive been vegitarian 4 5 years in a few weeks, yet my parents said they will kick me out if i go vegan (trust me, they would do that) so like, im going vegan as soon as i get to collage, but really, four years?? Im slowly learning to cook, and soon my meals will end up all being vegan. I know, four years is a terribly long time, so anyways thats wat im doing and its starting to work. but im defs open to other advice!!!!!
