The other day I was watching TV with my parents and it was a documentary about the ocean and the effect of fishing on sea life… by the end of my both of them were pretty disgusted by fishing methods and now there’s a current ban on fish products in my house due to them understanding the cruelty behind free range fish collection and slaughter. The show afterwards was one of those “How is it made” type shows with silk at one of the items… silk buying is now also banned with the conclusion that “people who wear silk are evil” thanks to them learning the worms are boiled alive.

Didn’t even try or wasn’t even intending on changing any views, just kinda happened thanks to them being in the same room at the time it was on. I don’t know how long they’ll avoid buying fish for but they’ve avoided brands for reason’s much less severe than this so I’m hopefully it’ll be a while at least.

Anyone else have any similar stories like these? Where you’re more of a witness to someone’s exposure and understanding than a real participant.

My dad, who has been making fun of my veganism for years, suddenly told me that he does Meat-Free Mondays and is trying to cut down! This really surprised me because I only see him maybe once or twice a year so I’ve not really had any chance to share information with him but because I asked for a PETA Present one year for Christmas, he’s been receiving emails ever since and something must’ve sunk in!!

    Hey @teatowls,

Thanks for sharing this story! I’m glad that your family has decided to avoid buying any fish products 🙂

I had a similar situation happen with my mom: I went vegetarian about 10 years ago and then vegan about 5 years into it, and my brother has been vegetarian for years. We always made a point to educate our parents on why we were against eating meat, and they were always really open, but they both continued to eat meat.

When I was in Thailand about half a year ago, I got an email from my mom completely out of the blue that basically said, “I’m not going to eat pork anymore” and then a day later one that said, “I’m going vegetarian”… I still have no idea what finally prompted her to make the switch, but I found it a little funny that after years of trying to get her to go veg, she decided to make the change while I was all the way in Thailand!

SO glad she’s veggie now though! 🙂
