There’s a local humane society that is struggling right now, and I have a few friends in bands that are willing to do a benefit concert to help me raise food/money for the humane society but I’m not sure if I really should support them? I know they’re helping out a lot so there’s no stray animals, but they euthanize animals 🙁 My rescue kittens mom got brought there the day after I got my kitten and we were going to adopt her but they put her down, apparently she had cancer but we were willing to pay to help her. I’m just stuck because they’re doing a good thing by helping animals, but are they really doing a good thing by putting animals down? Help!

Thank you all for your advice 🙂 I decided to help them! I actually talked to them about my kitten (Lily’s) mom. They said Lily’s mom’s case was to far gone and they only did it because they didn’t want her to suffer and us go through that emotional toll. They’re super appreciative with what I donated and we’re currently planning the benefit concert!

If it were me, I’d help them because donating money should hopefully mean they can support more animals and euthanise less but ultimately it’s up to you.

It doesn’t matter if they are a kill or no kill shelter. (PETA euthanizes animals, but in good light, they are usually suffering or dying. Actually PETA has one of the largest euthanasia rates for dogs in the USA. BUT I REMIND YOU THAT THEY BRING IN DYING SUFFERING ANIMALS FROM “no kill” SHELTERS. AND SHELTERS THAT WANT TO KEEP EUTHENASIA RATES DOWN. PETA offers those animals love in their last hour and a humane release). I personally would support the shelter. They do their best for their animals, and sometimes the best is letting them go to a better place, just as we would for a dying child or any other human for that fact (They do not euthanize them, but take them off all support and give them large quantities of morphine or other pain killers). Hope this helped!

I say it depends whether they are a no kill shelter or a kill shelter. Our local one just turned into a non-kill, so now we donate supplies and give money. Definitely support it if it’s no kill! If it is a kill shelter, do what you think. I don’t think putting healthy animals to sleep is a good thing. But as Peppermint below said, they do great things also. It’s your call!

Almost all local humane societies put animals to sleep. Its a damned if you do, damned if you dont situation. If they don’t put the animals down, they either have to be come over run and the animals suffer and don’t receive the food and medical treatment they need, or animals are turned away to catch and spread disease on the street, get attacked, abused or hit by cars and again suffer.

This is something you really need to read a lot about and think hard about and figure out how you feel and then decide from there. Personally, I think raising money for them is a wonderful thing! Humane societies rely almost entirely on donations, and any amount does wonderful things for the animals
