Lots of “animal rights activists”, not necessarily here, but other places on the web, only seem to care about cute or pretty animals, or animals they think are “cool.”
You see it on DeviantArt a lot with the “Wolfaboos”. A wolfaboo is basically a fan of wolves who is completely obsessed with them. Not that there’s anything wrong with liking an certain animal: but wolfaboos tend to take it really far, making up lies about how wolves are perfect and the “gods” of the Animal kingdom.
Many of these wolfaboos claim to be animal rights activists, yet the only issues they seem to care about involve those with wolves (and sometimes other canines.) They often rant on and on about wolf hunting, but think rattlesnake roundups are perfectly acceptable; cause rattlesnakes are “ugly reptiles” and not their “precious wolves”.
I’ve seen this on youtube as well. Videos about wolf hunting usually get comments like “OMG so sad!!! SAVE THE WOLFS!!!”, and nearly all the comments are like that. While I was reading the comments on a video about shark finning, their was one person who spoke up for the sharks, while most of the other comments where people ganging up on the one person who spoke up, saying things like, “Who cares about a stupid shark?”
Many of these wolfaboos also often eat meat. Cause they think it’s edgy or whatever to “eat meat like a wolf!”
And it’s not just wolves. Lots of people…not just wolfaboos…seem to only care about “cute animals”. They don’t care one bit about sharks or rattlesnakes or even cows. This makes me incredibly mad, because ALL animals have the right to live!
I understand you and I know how frustrating this can be, but don’t be discouraged, there is TONS of people, like you, that care for all animals. The best advice I can give you is to keep planting seeds of compassion on those people who only care about the “cute animals” talk to them about issues that relate to their favorite animal, the tell them about the suffering that ALL animals feel. Hope that helps! 😀
I know what you mean too. It annoys me because I think all animals are cute and some people just can’t see that.
I loved it when Peta2 had their SeaKittens campaign! http://features.peta.org/PETASeaKittens/
Oh my gosh, I totally know what you mean!! >_< Wolfaboos border on furry-ism and therianism. I used to admire those groups until I realized the majority are a bunch of nerds who really don't care about animals any more than your average Jane. Some people say they like animals or they're nice to them, and then they go munch on a burger, buy a puppy, use real fur for their animal costume, or somesh*t like that. Urghhhh.
I get exactly what you’re saying. I have friends like this, and although I love them to death, they just don’t get it. People always question why cows are my favorite animals and why I love them so much and am so against eating them- along with every other animal. It’s like, these creatures are all beautiful and they all have ways of expressing their feelings. They all play and have fun and can be happy, but those kind of things aren’t thought about very often by people. Yes, typically the only animals who are cared about are the “cute” ones. I think cows and pigs and chickens are very cute. Lots of people are raised to look at these animals as nothing more than dinner.
Every living creature was meant to live. Not to suffer, be shredded apart and eaten without a thought. And that’s exactly it. People don’t think. They don’t care. They don’t see the brightness and hope in the eyes of these “only-good-for-food” animals.
ALL animals should be protected and loved and given the opportunity to live their lives. Cows, pigs and chickens have the same rights as dogs, cats, ferrets, bunnies… And humans. The question is.. Why aren’t their rights being granted yet? Why can’t people see what they’re doing is wrong?
YES! I don’t even know what to say to people like this cause some of them just don’t care and its crazy. All animals are precious, that does not change because one of them do not appear “attractive” or “cute” by one’s standards. I am terrified of several bugs but I don’t kill them because its wrong! What’s hard is trying to get through to these people but its like they really can’t see how all animals deserve to live. My sister tells me that’s its ok to kill moths and fly’s cause they have no purpose. I just looked at her and said, “Maybe not to humans but I bet you their children would disagree.” And when does one’s purpose decide the value of their life? People really get on my nerves!
