I am vegan, however my cats and dogs are not. It makes me really sad that I have to feed them this, but what can I do? Is it possible for them to thrive off of veg diets? I’ve done research and most of my results have said no. But I’d like to know first hand from animal owners what you think.
For dogs: You have to be careful. Canines are technically omnivorous, but have a meat bias. Beyond needing to be extra careful with dietary needs, you’ll have to watch for signs of clinical depression if they aren’t eating what their bodies are designed to.
Cats: No. Cats are obligate carnivores. Feeding them an entirely plant-based diet is bad for them. (For that matter, most store-brand cat foods are, too, as they have lots of plant protein as well.)
The thing about having meat-eating pets is that, yes, they eat meat.
I have heard of people who have done it successfully, but you have to know what you are doing. I want my cat to be vegan, but she is so picky and I don’t know enough about cat nutrition to be able to try incorporating a change like that without risking her health.
I know of a couple who has two dogs and feeds them as vegetarians. It’s possible, but I wouldn’t suggest it. As much as we all want meat eating to stop, animals aren’t ever going to choose that life. It’s unnatural to choose that lifestyle for your pets.
However, what I do with my dogs is feed them vegan at snack time!
i think choosing to be a vegan as a human is okay, but as an animal i think its crazy. it’s their natural instinct to eat meat. Plus, your a part of peta. How well are you really treating your animals if you’re forcing them to eat/do the same things you do? it’s like forcing your dog into one of those little dog sweaters so you guys are “twinzies”
