I am vegan, however my cats and dogs are not. It makes me really sad that I have to feed them this, but what can I do? Is it possible for them to thrive off of veg diets? I’ve done research and most of my results have said no. But I’d like to know first hand from animal owners what you think.
I have a pet dog, and kittens and no I personally, don’t feed them vegan diets. However, that’s mainly because I am a teen and my parents buy them regular dog and cat food from the Dollar store or other grocery store because it’s cheap. However, I do know that many pet dogs and cats are vegans and are very healthy. As a matter of fact, I’ve heard that the oldest cat alive is a vegan kitty I know for a fact, that cats and dogs can be healthy vegans and vegetarians.
It doesn’t make me sad to feed them dog and cat food because I know they are the remains of what people ate or the meat that didn’t make the cut. The animal didn’t die for my dog and kittens to eat it, it died for humans.
On the issue with animal cruelty and feeding your cat and dog meat: I know this might be offensive and I do apologize before hand. You are the one who decides what you feed your pets, not us, so whether or not it’s ethical is your choice. In my opinion, and I’m going to be brutally honest (sorry if I offend and keep in mind this is for ME not you) I was always turned off by veganism because I thought that feeding your dog and cat meat was hypocritical. I am a vegan (diet) but still think it’s hypocritical for me at least. I simply don’t believe in speciesism. I can’t put a cute puppy or kitten over another animal simply because it’s cute. I think that when I grow up and move out of my house, I will either not own pets or I will only feed them dog and cat food from the grocery store because that way I know they were the remains or leftovers.
There are tons of people who have vegan cats and dogs, and the animals are perfectly fine. It takes some extra time and money, but it can be done with no harm to the animals.
Personally, My cats and dogs eat a lot of fruit and veggies just because they like them, but I would never switch them to a vegan diet, even if I could afford all the best vegan cat and dog food. It just isn’t natural for them to be vegan (unlike humans, who I fully believe it’s totally natural for).
