As if being forced to a life in captivity isn’t enough to bear, there is even more evidence showing the mistreatment of orcas at SeaWorld. According to recent documents released in a lawsuit against the company, trainers have been giving the orcas a psychoactive drug to battle their aggressive behavior towards each other. Animal activist groups argue that the drugs are likely being used because of their stress-induced violence that is the result of living in captivity. The orcas also exhibit evidence of their negative state of mental health through abnormal and repetitive behaviors such as self-mutilation and chewing on concrete. Rather than solving these issues by providing more space for these animals or even releasing them to a sanctuary, SeaWorld covers the issues with unnecessary, harmful drugs.
