Stepney City Farm in London, will no longer be able to keep Lloyd and Leila, two very tame, friendly and healthy pet cows. Despite kind offers from the public to pay for the cows’ feed and care at the farm, the owners are adament that they will not have the facilities and space to let them remain there and they have no option but to ‘let them go’.

Hillside have offered a life-long home to these very affectionate animals who have lived all their lives in Stepney. Because these cows do not have the relevant passports, DEFRA will not let them be moved even though the managers at Stepney Farm are very happy for them to come to the Sanctuary.

While we understand why DEFRA keep strict control over cattle movement in the UK in order to prevent the spreading of disease, we know they have made exemptions before. We feel that in the case of Lloyd and Leila, who would spend the rest of their natural days living at the Sanctuary, there is no risk of them ever entering the food chain, and so, DEFRA should allow them one last journey to the safety of our Sanctuary.

Sadly, unless DEFRA grant an exemption and permit the cows to be moved to Norfolk, they will be destroyed on the farm where they live, and then incinerated. For the full story, please click here:

Hillside had Lloyd and Leila tested for Bovine TB and they didn’t have it so they should’ve been allowed to travel.

But DEFRA still wouldn’t grant the passports so these lovely cows have been killed.

I am so angry. I know millions of cows are killed every day for the meat industry but here was a chance to save two cows who were basically pets and due to stupid red tape they’ve lost their lives.

Rest in peace Lloyd and Leila, I hope the next life is better than this one.

@lweske I really hope so too. It’d be a senseless death.
