Whenever I go out to eat with other people, they always take notice of the fact that I don’t eat meat. When I tell them I am a vegetarian, (and aspiring vegan) they verbally attack my choice
“That’s so stupid.”
“You’re gonna die from not getting enough protein”
“But meat is sooo good.”
“You aren’t changing anything by NOT eating meat”
“Humans are SUPPOSED to eat animals.”
“It’s not like you’re the one killing the animal”
And the minute I try to explain that yes, I get enough protein, yes I actually am saving lives, and yes me eating meat IS killing an animal–they call me an “annoying veg” and tell me to “stop pressing my opinion on other people.”
Is it just me or is that really hypocritical? Does this happen to anyone else? How do you deal with this?
P.S. I find it funny when my obese, meat-eating, family members lecture me on how unhealthy being a vegetarian is when I have the lowest BMI in the family.
I actually lost friends in high school over being vegan. People literally did not want anything to do with me because I decided to be cruelty free. It was actually very depressing, but thankfully I had Peta2 to support me. And I never was the one to bring it up, and then when I tried to explain and just answer their question I got attacked! I do not miss those days but like everyone else says, every vegetarian/vegan goes through this. Some people will only see animals as food. It’s sad. Just remember we’re all here, on your side. 🙂
Every vegan/vegetarian goes through this. Just hand them a leaflet, or explain why you beleive in being veg, and watch Buzzfeed’s video called “Questions every vegetarian is tired of answering”. I get asked the same exact questions, and every vegan does. It will get better, it did for me 🙂 Just prove how being vegan/vegetarian is better for you, and they will stop making those remarks! Good luck!:)
We all have been there. My mom and dad would tell me to sit at the table until I ate the meat (I would eat all the veggies around), and I sat there for hours until they would give up. Thing is, others cannot force you to do anything and no matter how much they complain, it is YOUR CHOICE. I stopped eating red meat at 12, white meat at 15, and at 20 i turned vegan. I have gotten discouragement for a long time now, but I know I am doing the right thing and no matter what people say it is still going to be OUR CHOICE.
