Dark leafy greens. If you listen to http://www.compassionatecook.com/publications/vegetarian-food-for-thought-podcast she is very knowledgeable and goes in depth about a lot of issues, such as iron. You do not have to take a supplement but if it’s really that bad after eating iron-rich foods and getting your blood work done afterwards, it’s a last defense option.

The human body is a wonderful machine at regeneration; try out all these tips to help your iron levels without resorting to pills and see how it goes.

    Hey @slammy,

It’s great that you’ve decided to go vegetarian! :) Iron-rich foods include beans, black-eyed peas, lentils, chickpeas, oatmeal, dried fruits, nuts, sunflower seeds, nutritional yeast, molasses, and grains such as quinoa and millet. Be sure to check out our vegan guide to good nutrition here: http://www.peta2.com/blog/a-vegans-guide-to-good-nutrition/ :)

E-mail us at peta2@peta2.com if you have any questions!

I have Anemia which is an iron-deficiency disorder, this is from not eating meat. I take iron suppliments which you can get at any local drugstore, just ask the Pharmacist. I suggest you go get a blood test though and ask your doctor how much you need to take to get your levels back to normal. Telling them your a vegetarian is a good idea and they usually give you ideas on how to live healthy not eating meat. Hope this helps : )
