I have been a vegetarian for 3 years now and I plan on becoming a vegan once I am able to buy my own food. Mainly because of the problems my family gives me. Ever since I first stopped eating meat my parents, grandparents, sister, ect. have mocked me,made fun of it,and laughed about how apparently its “so funny that we kill animals for food” they have tried to convince me to eat meat so many times but I just ignore them. I really don’t understand why they can’t leave me alone. Does anyone else deal with these problems? Plus now they have a whole other issues with me wanting to wear cruelty free make up,I pay for it so I do not understand why they have to be so rude. 🙁

If I were you I’d tell them that they could still make fun of me if they could sit through watching as many vegan and animal abuse documentaries without crying. I bet you then they wouldn’t think it’s funny. Earthlings is on youtube, peta also has lots of resources you can share. They’ll see theres nothing funny about it

Don’t worry, you are not alone! My family is the same way! At school I am the only vegan and at lunch every single day somebody has to say something negative about me being vegan and at home it’s always my brother the one making fun of me for it! But after a while I just learned to ignore them because if you actually listento them and get offended then they won’t stop because they will think they are right!
I think that people are like that because sometimes humans feel scared and threatend when there is something diferent that they can’t understand and we vegetarians and vegans are diferent just by standing up for what we believe in and choosing to leave meat off our plates! 🙂
Just remember that no matter how many people are mean to you if you really care about something don’t let anyone change you because those are there things that make us special! <3

    Hey @smooches,

Sorry to hear your family isn’t being as supportive as you’d like. Be sure to check out our page on how to talk to your parents about going vegan here:

It’s an adjustment for them at first, but once they see how much it means to you and that you’re sticking to it they’ll hopefully get behind it more. 🙂 E-mail us at [email protected] if you need any more help with it. Thanks!

@Styna Thanks 🙂 Things are very difficult with them and even after years they still do things/say things, sometimes it goes beyond words but I try not to let it bother me it can just be difficult. I do not understand why people have problems with how others choose to live there life.

Chances us, anyone who wasn’t raised in a Veg family has to deal with it. I did, and still do every once in a while (and I’m 22 now).
I say try going vegan now. Even if you don’t buy your food, there must be vegan options in your house.
Plus, there are a TON of vegan foods you can buy for less than the cost of makeup. Beans, rice, fruit, veggies, oatmeal, etc.
Don’t let their comments get to you. Eventually, when they realize their comments don’t get a rise out of you anymore, they’ll stop.
