Ive been a vegetarian for a little over a year now and would like to become a vegan but I have a few issues with it. My family isnt exactly wealthy and we cant really afford it. Also my dad thinks its completly unhealthy and unatural to be come a vegan ” because people are omnivores” I think thats a bit close minded. Any advice?
As everyone else has said, it’s typically more affordable to be vegan than omnivore, as long as you aren’t consuming a bunch of the comfort products like faux meat and vegan cheese.
I will say that the price of raw fruits and vegetables has gone up like CRAZY. I had plans to do a juice fast for a week (which turned into eating like normal while also consuming raw juice lol) but I spent half my monthly food budget on a weeks worth of fruit and veg. It’s ridiculous. But as long as you aren’t doing THAT…
Pasta, beans, rice, etc – cheapest stuff on the market, and can be made into tons of different delicious vegan meals.
One place you could look for “accidentally vegan” foods is at the Dollar Tree and Big Lots (if there is one near you). Surprisingly, I have found quite a bit of vegan food at cheaper stores. You may find some meals, but cheaper stores are more useful at getting desserts, snacks, and baking mixes (muffins/cakes/cookies/brownies). All of the dollar trees near me carry baking mixes by Marie Calender and Duncan Hines, who are more vegan-friendly, and they come in smaller packages, so it is a perfect size for one vegan in a household. If you’re baking any, applesauce works great
I actually found confetti cupcakes at the Dollar Tree. One of the happiest days of my life. (always read packages, you never know what will be vegan)
You guys are super helpful, I have sat down a few times to try and talk to my dad about it though he doesnt want to hear it, it seems. He is very stubborn. All in all though if it doesnt work out ill just be vegetarian until I can move out and make my own choices.
