• What do you believe?

I saw a topic, and I posted earlier, but I want to make a separate topic specifically for this topic. I don’t generally like the idea of hijacking someone’s topic.

Anyway, what’s your personal beliefs, philosophically, religiously, and the like? Do you believe in the existence of a god, gods, or do you worship his Noodly Appendage? Are you an atheist, a theist, or simply believe there is no sure way of knowing? If you’re an atheist, do you believe in some “supernatural” things or completely reject all things pertaining to mysticism and the like?

Personally, I’m an atheist and a humanist. I also have a few philosophical views that originate from religions. I practice yoga. It calms me and opens me up to a time for instrospection and “meditation” in a sense. I’ve made major life decisions based on what I finally saw in a yoga asana. My favorite’s Chandra Namaskar (Moon Salutation). It’s a good philosophy to live by, the Yamas and Niyamas (aside from the concept of God).

Anyway. What are your beliefs and philosophies? I’m curious. :)

I believe we don’t know what we are, where we came from or why we’re here and I’m interested in seeing those questions answered.

If there is some sort of all-powerful creator, he/she/it can kiss my ass for allowing such horrible pain and suffering to occur.

I agree with the views of many futurists and I feel like I was born at least a couple hundred years behind the time period in which I belong.

I believe that ending pain, suffering, aging, illness and death should be our primary goals, and that harming beings as a means of reaching those goals in unacceptable.

I believe that if you live a life in which you try your best to not contribute to the harming of other beings, you can do whatever you want and believe whatever you want.
If you take it to the next level by defending the innocent and defenseless against those who seek to harm them, you are a true hero.

I’m a Buddhist, all though I was baptized when I was a baby. I used to be a Christian, but as I got a bit older, I realized that Christianity wasn’t for me. I don’t believe in creator gods, but I believe that religions that are based off of love and respect are perfectly valid :) Basically, I’m just trying to live a life free of material desires and reach the state of nirvana. I suppose you could call me the ‘black sheep of the family’ ;) haha

agree with caramel, “I’m more so agnostic than christian now. I believe in God” is an oxymoronic statement

I don’t think it’s possible to know, either way. I’m agnostic.

@autumnrossi, you said you’re more agnostic but you also said you believe in God. Agnosticism is the middle of knowing and not knowing, not taking a position on the stance or just not feeling any compelling evidence or arguments towards either side. An agnostic would not have a firm belief in God.

Do you mean you just no longer hold traditional Christian values? If so, the word you’d be looking for is simply “theist”. It refers to the belief in God without connotations of any specific religious doctrines.

I’d love to hear your reply on this :)

I mean a church that preaches that homosexuality is a sin even, not homophobia lol.
I think homophobia is a sin to be fair. I can’t stand homophobes.

I was baptised as LDS 5 years ago, and I consider myself Christian, but I don’t attend church anymore. However I do study scripture.
I just can’t associate myself with any church as such as I don’t want to be associated with any church that preaches homophobia, free thinking, natural emotions, masturbation etc is a sin. Too many people have committed suicide over feeling like they’re terrible people because of what Churches and people preach.
I just practice at home now I guess, believing that God is love and compassion.

I’ve recently decided that I’m more so agnostic than christian now. I believe in God, our creator , loving everyone, and bettering the world with love, positivity, etc. Also, I believe he hears our prayers. I feel that everyone builds their own relationship with Him and that as long as you believe what you are doing is for the right reasons and is right as well as with love, then you aren’t wrong. (: Love.Peace.Happiness

I’m an atheist. I used to be a Christian, but I kind of just stop believing after awhile.

Agnostic-atheist: no one can claim to have proof either way, but if the apocalypse comes in December and bets are being placed then I’m putting my money on the atheists. However I do not accept any religious beliefs—ONLY the possibility that an entity *could* have created the universe.

My old asian philosophy book puts it best: “Because Atman would be completely unknowable, even if it were to be real, the only sensible thing for us to do is to ignore the whole subject and get on with our lives.”

@Leno Science has made great progressive change. I don’t like religion because it tells you to just accept that it’s like that and stops curiosity as to why it happens. It covers it with smoke screens of supernatural aspects. Science answers questions. Perhaps you haven’t delved deep enough into it.

It’s like how people condemned witchcraft and the “potions” they made, which in modern times we now realize was simply medicine. That the potions were mixtures of herbs that had medicinal qualities. They didn’t know what was in them, they just knew it worked and thought it was mystical. We now know it was the chemical properties that relieved tooth ache and the like. Or how churches said frankincense was good for the soul and scientists discovered that frankincense is actually just an antidepressant.

Science answers questions where religion accepts being stumped as to how it works in my mind.

Since I gave up the notion of gods, I’ve come to appreciate everything in the world so much more. I’ve grown more compassionate to everyone and everything and I’ve never worked harder or felt more driven to enjoy my life right now. I’m no longer constantly depressed. I love myself for the first time in my life.

And in case you’re wondering, I’ve read the Bible through and through. I’ve looked at multiple sources on the development of Christianity, as well as other religions.

I’m a Protestant with a lot of Naturalist/Pagan tendencies. I don’t follow the Pagan religion at all really, but share some qualities such as coexisting in the world and trying to improve the world not make it worse. I’m the kind of Christian who isn’t so hung up on rules and people going to Hell as much as trying to live to my best standards based on certain teachings. I do believe people should have the right to live life to their wants as long as no one else is losing their rights.

I believe in the supernatural and the belief that there are powers beyond our mere self.
Belief in egalitarianism (also applying to animals)
    A realist.

Growing up there have been many things that naturally could not happen for example when I was a child and very sick my mother (a christian) prayed that the bottle of cream medicine she was rubbing on my back to not run out when it was almost completely empty and she applies large amounts of it all night without it running out. God? Human desire and longing? Either way, scientifically non explainable.

I am a utilitarian Atheist. I will embrace secular morality and science.

I’m trying to be more understanding of the fact that being religious does not make someone less intelligent, and being religious does not necessarily mean you just do what you’re told and follow the belief your parents taught you in blind faith – I know there are many people who find a religion separate from their parents’ beliefs (which I do tend to respect more, unfortunately, since it shows they went looking!). But I absolutely hate it when people try to insist that religious morality should apply to everyone – your morality can come from the rules set out by your religion and your God, but if you live in a country that dictates the separation of the church and state, respect it!

And even a belief in a God or Gods does not have to dictate what you think is right or wrong. Just because someone believes in the Christian God does not mean they have to agree with other Christians about homosexuality, or other religions, or pornography, or transgendered individuals, or eating meat. You can always be theistic or pantheistic and still find out through due logical process whether or not something is right or wrong.

For anyone reading – if you’re not an atheist, it doesn’t mean you don’t have to think for yourself! Religion should not be ignorance. If you have faith in your religion you should not be afraid to explore and question.

It does scare me a little bit how many Christians today say God is all about love and then turn around and tell you you’re going to burn in hell, show you the passage where God sentenced children to be ripped apart and eaten by bears, or told his minions to kill their sons. I think… I think I’m looking for a different kind of love, one that doesn’t involve ravenous bears.
