I recieved a leather purse from a friend as a thank you for helping her out at her shop. And i would feel sooo bad to give it back, shes so sweet. Ive been stuck in this situation a few times but usually i can return the item. But the purse is from her shop, so i cant really return it. What do i do? What do you usually do with non vegan gifts?
Like @hakred I do let everyone know I’m vegan too, but that doesn’t stop people making mistakes – twice in the past week I’ve been given gifts with honey in because the people “didn’t think it mattered”. So you can try and educate your friends/family so they know but they will still slip up. Politely tell them so they don’t make the same mistake again, but still thank them for trying.
I let every one know about my veganism, so I usually don’t have this problem as any one buying for me would know better. However, you could give it away.. donate it, or even explain to your friend that while you love & appreciate her gift to you, that you would prefer that she takes it back because of the cruelty involved. Who knows, she might do some research of her own and stop selling leather all together.
If I really cant do anything with it, like return it, I normally give it to someone who will use it. I mean, it’s probably a great bag, and someone wouldn’t mind using it, and throwing it away would be wasteful. I had this same problem with some wool-covered goatmilk and honey soap I recieve before going vegan, but I still use it because, well… throwing it away is wasteful, I’m poor, and no one wants my used soap :/ Basically, don’t worry too much. :3
