• Why not to eat honey?

I understand that honey is an animal product and that’s why vegans won’t eat it. But I was just wondering if it hurts the bees to keep them to get honey and beeswax? Or is it just the captivity part? I tried looking it up and couldn’t really find a simple answer so I was hoping someone on here could help me out. Thanks! (:

Oh, Chamomile tea, even without honey, is good for sore throats. Also, decaf black tea with soy milk is very soothing. :)

I understand now. That’s so horrible! I never thought about any of that. I’ll have to find a new product to soothe my sore throats now though. Thanks for all the replies (:

The honey industry also contributes largely to the decreased population of bees. These small insects may seem insignificant, but in reality they are a PARAMOUNT factor in the well-being of the environment. Practices (such as those outlined in the link above) only worsen the onset of Colony Collapse Disorder.

Honey isn’t just an animal rights concern, it’s a major environmental concern. There are many honey alternatives today, not just agave but also “honee” made from apples, rice, and other plant-based foods.

Bees get their legs torn off in the machinery used to harvest honey plus their food is replaced with cheap sugar which kills them. It’s bad the the ecosystem. Plus honey is bee vomit so it’s gross.

Often, honey costs many bees their whole lives to make- 6 bees per teaspoon of honey- and many sacrifice themselves for their hives. This is their sacrifice, their patriotism, and it is exploited by beekeepers. I kind of hate how hard it is to find vegan chap stick though, even at health food stores.

It is actually a combination of both, bee keepers will routinely kill queens to keep control of the hives along with many bees they unintentionally kill. The smoke that bee keepers use to sedate bees is harmful to them and the sugar water the bee keepers feed the bees is unnatural. A common misconception is that bee keepers only take the excess honey that bees would not normally use, but bees would never let honey go to waste and if there is extra they would split into two hives. Bee keepers take far more than would be excess, feeding the bees sugar water instead of allowing them to consume their honey. This all goes without saying that many vegans believe that exploitation of animals is wrong even when there are not harmful effects for the animals simply on the basis of captivity.

This is just a small summary of the very big problem of bee exploitation, if you want to know more visit http://www.vegetus.org/honey/honey.htm

Life summary : I love animals even more than people

  • jpatr1d

I have always loved animals, no matter what shape, size, color, species they are. I started as a vegetarian a few years ago, but i only knew that i didn't want to eat animal. i stoped for a while when i lost my job and ate what i could. no excuse i know. but soon later to realized my mission in life and purpose. i am here to be the voice of those who do not speak human. i changed my outlook to this because i found a boxer mix dog laying under my porch. she had gotten hit by a car and was severely starved. everyone around me was like leave it alone, you don't know where it came from, but i didn't care i had to save her. i rushed her to the emergency vet clinic where they did immediate surgery on her. despite those peoples commentary i saved a dogs life and from that point on i knew that if people treated a dog that way i wonder how people treat non domestic animals. I researched and came across peta2 where i now am an animal activist and vegan. I continue to help and save animals that i find and plan on never changing my ways for any one.
