Christian Serratos’ ‘Dia de los Muertos’ Ad

Twilight star and peta2 maven Christian Serratos has been championing animal rights for quite some time now. After going vegetarian seven years ago, she’s talked with us about her choice, stated that she’d “Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur,” and spoken out against animal dissection in schools. She has also protested at Ringling Bros.’ Los Angeles shows and starred in our “Canada’s Club Scene Sucks” campaign. Now, she’s letting us in a bit deeper on her love for animals in one of the hottest ads we’ve seen, with an amazing “Dia de los Muertos” theme.

Christian Serratos Day Of The Dead AdRobert Sebree
Dia de los Muertos—or Day of the Dead—is all about honoring the dead. Every November, this Mexican holiday, celebrated worldwide, pays respect to the dead and celebrates past life, as people congregate in cemeteries to be with the souls of the departed and build vast altars containing colorful and personal memorabilia and photos. This observance connects with peta2′s mission, too, as animal lovers and animal rights advocates celebrate animals’ lives year round and do everything possible to save them.

Christian is proud of her Hispanic culture and knows how important it is to speak out for animals used for food because Mexican-American youth are 60 percent more likely to be overweight than non-Hispanic youth are. Factory farms—the ubiquitous machine in which animals are raised for the plate—are hell for animals and some of the most horrific places in existence. Check out these facts:

  • Ten billion animals are killed in the U.S. each year for food. Factory farmed animals (both those used for their milk and eggs and those used for meat) live very sad and disturbing lives. Because the system is designed to produce meat, milk, and eggs as quickly and cheaply as possible, many animals are kept in tiny cages or stalls, are deprived of exercise, and are not able even to move around.
  • Factory farms cause climate change. According to the United Nations, raising animals for food is one of the top sources of greenhouse-gas emissions.
  • There is no nutritional need for humans to eat any animal product; all our dietary needs, even as infants and children, are best supplied by a meatless diet. Vegans reduce their risk of developing many of our nation’s top killers, including heart disease, cancer, strokes, and diabetes. It’s never been a better time to explore the traditional (and delicious!) Mexican staples of beans, corn, and vegetables!

If you love animals, it should be easy to do everything that you can to protect their lives, just as Christian does. Going vegetarian shows respect for all animals and allows you to contribute to their lives instead of their deaths. Make the compassionate and respectful choice to save the lives of more than 100 animals each year—go vegetarian today!
