'Secret Life' Star Megan Park's Anti-Fur Ad

Megan Park has a secret to share: She’ll never wear fur. On the hit TV show The Secret Life of the American Teenager, Megan plays Grace Bowman, a cheerleader who stands by her morals. Offscreen, Megan is just as committed to her beliefs when it comes to fur. In PETA’s latest public service announcement (PSA), she is a cheerleader for animals when she tells fans, “If you wouldn’t wear your dog, please don’t wear any fur or fur trim.”

Megan wouldn’t dream of wearing Tyson, the rescued mutt who costars in the PSA. Imagine if Tyson lived the life of an animal killed for fur. Imagine if he spent his entire life in a cramped, filthy cage, only to be killed by workers using the cheapest methods available, such as suffocation, electrocution, or poison. Or imagine if he were caught in the wild by a steel-jaw trap, only to be strangled, beaten, or stomped to death by a trapper. Imagine Tyson’s fur being torn off his body—maybe even while he was still alive—and sold as a coat. Would you wear him? Tyson will sleep safely tonight, but millions of rabbits, minks, beavers, foxes, chinchillas, raccoons, and bears face this cruel fate—all for the sake of fashion. If you wouldn’t wear Tyson, please don’t wear any other animal.

Wearing dog fur is an everyday reality, as both cat and dog fur is often deliberately mislabeled as fur from other species to trick customers. There are no penalties for abusing any type of animal—including cats and dogs—on Chinese fur farms. Animals on fur farms are confined to wire cages, often bludgeoned until presumed dead, and then skinned, sometimes while they’re still alive. Because more than half the fur in the U.S. comes from China, the odds of purchasing dog fur is far too high. Remind family and friends that buying even the tiniest amount of fur trim funds horrific abuse to animals, including dogs like Tyson.
