We love fun holiday traditions, but how can we enjoy anything that comes at an animal’s expense, like Easter eggs? 🥺 Help us get everyone to give Easter a compassionate glow-up so that chickens can have a happy holiday, too! 🐔❤️

Where Do Easter Eggs Come From?

Eggs used for Easter egg hunts and similar activities often come from hens who live on factory farms. They’re squished into battery cages with up to eight other birds and don’t have enough room to spread even one wing. 😰 To prevent stress-induced behavior like pecking their cagemates, they’re kept in semi-darkness. To make matters even worse, the ends of their beaks are cut off—without painkillers—with a hot blade. When hens can no longer produce eggs quickly enough, egg suppliers see them as worthless and they’re gassed with carbon dioxide or sent to the slaughterhouse. 😱

More than 300,000 chickens are crowded into small battery cages at this egg farm in Southern India. There are up to eight hens in a single cage, where they will spend their entire lives. There is not enough space for them to spread their wings or exhibit any natural behaviors such as scratching, foraging or perching.

Buying chickens’ eggs to hide or play with for Easter just keeps this cruelty going. It also puts humans at major risk—to help us avoid bacterial infections like salmonellosis, doctors urge us not to eat eggs after they’ve been played with or hidden. 😬 More than 650,000 Americans get sick from eating salmonella-tainted eggs every year, and 600 die from it. 😨 Big, big yikes.

What You Can Do

Use these leaflets to convince people to avoid buying chicken eggs for Easter egg hunts and to instead hide plastic eggs with vegan candies or other cruelty-free treats inside. 😋 You can help prevent chickens from suffering in the egg industry and humans from getting dangerously sick—plus, you’ll rack up 25 peta2 points in our Rewards Program. 😏 Just follow these steps:
