If you’ve ever heard one of Melissa Ferrick’s fiercely personal songs, you know that her life just wouldn’t make the cut as a transcript for another episode of Leave It to Beaver. She’s no stranger to hurt, but she also knows hope—and that’s exactly what she gives to animals she rescues from her local shelter.
Melissa knows that every kitten and puppy born is a virtual death sentence for another unfortunate animal in a shelter. That’s why her source of puppy-love comes from rescuing. And just as her songs dig deep, Melissa gets to the root of the problem by always spaying and neutering her companion animals so that new animals don’t occupy homes that could have taken in homeless animals already born and destined to be destroyed. “Neutering your animals is the first thing you should do,” she told peta2. “It definitely keeps the population down.”
The singer/songwriter got candid with peta2 on other issues near to her heart when we caught up with her last. “I had this thought come to my head that I just wanted to start screaming, just flip out and do a Jerry Maguire in the middle of the mall,” she laughed. Watch the interview below to find out what really gets under her skin.
