Those of you who are fans of Bloodlined Calligraphy already know that these guys are big supporters of peta2. They attended PETA's 25th Anniversary Gala, where vocalist Ally chummed it up with P!nk and Chris P. Carrot, and they post PETA videos and links on their MySpace page and hand out animal rights literature at shows. If you're a diehard fan, then you probably also know that Ally is an outspoken vegetarian. So it shouldn't be surprising to learn that she recently recorded a radio public service announcement (PSA) for peta2, asking listeners: “When will we as a society realize that animals are individuals who feel loneliness and pain? When will we learn to respect all living beings?”
Listen to the recording below, and then check out our interview with Ally, who recently went vegetarian after a long battle with her mom. (We're guessing that some of you can relate to that.)
So how long have you been a vegetarian?
Not that long, actually. I wasn't allowed to—when I lived with my mom, she wouldn't let me. So it wasn't until I moved out a year and a half ago.
Was there any one thing that made you want to go vegetarian?
I just always have wanted to. There were many people who influenced me. The singer for Silverchair is vegan, and I've listened to them since I was real young. So I guess looking up to him kind of made me look up to that lifestyle. Then, after watching some of the videos that are on PETA's Web sites, that really solidified my decision.
Was there any particular thing that you saw on a video that really hit you?
It's just horrifying the way that animals are killed for food. It's awful, and it made me sick to my stomach. I was like, ‘I can never eat meat again. That's disgusting.’
Did you notice any changes physically or mentally after you went vegetarian?
Oh, yeah. Well, I'm sick right now, which is weird because I'm never sick. Since going vegetarian, I noticed that I haven't gotten sick as much—until just this week. I mean, that's a pretty long time not to get sick! So I was pretty happy with that.
Yeah, that's really good if you haven't gotten sick in a year and a half!
Yeah, and then—I mean, it could just be coincidence—but I have suffered from a pretty deep depression in the past, and in the last year or so, it's pretty much lifted off me. So, pretty much my whole world has gotten better.
As a Christian, can you tell us how you think that Christianity and vegetarianism relate to each other?
I think that that's how God intended it. Genesis talks about how God gave us the animals to take care of and that they were never intended to be eaten until after the fall of man occurred. So to me, it's like a more pure walk of life as a Christian, to keep your body free of the toxins and poisons from all the chemicals that are in meat.
What have you found to be effective ways of reaching out to people who are curious about vegetarianism and animal rights?
My boyfriend used to be the biggest meat-eater I've ever seen. He'd eat beef like three times a day, and now he's vegetarian. People don't really understand how awful the animals are treated and the process they have to undergo to be sold in the market. I think that when people are exposed to it, they get that sick feeling in their stomach because they know it's wrong and they feel like, ‘Hey, I kind of want to do something about this too.’
Also, I put one of the videos on my MySpace, and I used to get tons of comments all the time from kids, saying, ‘I'm never going to eat meat again’ and ‘Oh my gosh, I didn't know that happened.’ So I think it's more like the public is just not aware of it. I try to do my little part for animals by just getting the word out there about how horrific it is for them.
Is there anything you'd like to say to your fans about having compassion and getting involved?
I know that PETA has many resources on how you can get involved, so if you feel like you want to do something to make a better world for animals, definitely just get off your butts, and do it!
You heard the woman! Get off your butts and kick off the new year by kicking meat to the curb.
