Brad Staba

We're stumped. What do you say about a guy who can throw punchlines as well as he can throw down on a ledge, rail, or ramp, who is sponsored by companies like Girl Skateboards (part of Crail Tap, arguably the coolest sponsor in skateboarding), who owns Skate Mental, and who is a vegetarian? Nothing. Obviously, he should be doing the talking! So, we asked pro skateboarder Brad Staba to chat with us for one hot minute, and he matched us, then raised us five, with a seriously awesome interview on how to treat your body, and your pooch!

Why did you go vegetarian?

I felt terrible eating animals. Now they make every type of "meat" product—but meat-free. So if you miss those BBQ ribs, you can just go to the health store and get some un-ribs.

What are your favorite foods?

I live in San Francisco, so I'm lucky when it comes to veggie food. I eat out mainly. And when I cook at home, it's a lot of pasta, rice, mock meat, and fresh veggies. On the road it's a different story. I usually find a health-food store and stock up. When I traveled with Ed Templeton, we'd find a college or bigger city and grab the yellow pages.

The skate community seems to have a lot of vegetarian and vegan riders. Why do you think that is?

I think that skateboarders are very critical when it comes to most things, so it only makes sense to be aware of your diet and intake. The better the stuff you put in your body, the better it responds to the abuse you put it through. Skateboarding is hard on your body, so anything helps.

Why should kids look into vegetarianism?

I think kids are in the position to learn how to treat your body and also to be aware of the treatment of animals. If kids are willing to read a book or two or ask somebody who has the information, they will find out it’s not a hard thing to eat right. I started at a young age, so it was pretty easy to stay on that path.

How many animal companions do you have?

My dog, Kickstand. My girlfriend has a cat and a lizard. I’m thinking about getting another dog sometime soon.

What do you think about people who keep their dogs chained outside 24/7?

Dogs belong inside with you. I could never imagine keeping my dog outside. The best thing about having a dog is to let him do whatever you’re doing. My dog follows me around all over the house. He’s totally interested in what’s going on.

What animal rights issues are especially important to you?

KEEP YOUR DOG INSIDE!
