Do you remember back in the day when music was all steel guitars, harmonics, and big hair? Neither do we, actually, but here at peta2, we’re a diverse bunch, so we’re excited to welcome the queens of country—Emmylou Harris, Dolly Parton, and Loretta Lynn—to our prestigious list of supporters. Add them to the very vegetarian Shania Twain (Did you catch her talking about being veg in I Heart Huckabees?) and our favorite Johnny Cash impersonator, Joaquin Phoenix, and peta2’s got more country than a strip mall packed with line-dancing bars!
These stars are all helping PETA get the word out that friends don’t chain friends.
Each member of this fabulous trio has worked on a new PETA PSA to help call attention to the suffering of companion animals. Dolly Parton (I know! The Dolly Parton!) donated her song “Will He Be Waiting for Me?” for an ad asking people not to leave dogs home alone. Loretta Lynn took a break from winning Grammys and hanging out with Jack White of The White Stripes to highlight the plight of chained dogs in a PSA featuring her classic hit “I Wanna Be Free.” And Emmylou, a devout vegetarian and country legend, not only rolled her sleeves up to help PETA build doghouses to provide shelter and warmth for needy dogs, but also hosted a news conference in Nashville, Tennessee—home of bluegrass!—to screen Loretta’s and Dolly’s PSAs as well as one of her own. Oh yeah, and she also worked with none other than Conor Oberst on the new Bright Eyes album, I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning,
and showed up on Heartbreaker, the 2002 album from Ryan Adams (who once dedicated an album to his dog—aww, how sweet!).
