On Our Radar

Josh HartnettWe know he’s been on this list before, but we have the latest scoop and thought you should, too. Josh Hartnett, the handsome guy you’ve seen in Black Hawk Down and most recently in Hollywood Homicide, has won PETA’s online sexiest vegetarian poll. Beating out previous winner Tobey Maguire, you may wonder … how did he do it? Well, we think it might have something to do with his big heart, in addition to his physical attributes. We first read that his meat-free lifestyle came about several years ago when, he says, “One day I was cutting up a chicken for my mom, and I hit a tumor with the knife. There was pus and blood all over the place. That was enough for me.” Makes sense, doesn’t it?

Sarah Michelle GellarPeople who wear fur these days are either ignorant or arrogant. But what about all the other animal skins out there that designers try to push on consumers? Sarah Michelle Gellar, for one, isn’t having any part of it. When Seventeen magazine “enhanced” her image on its April cover, she became publicly furious. However, Seventeen’s attempt to apologize just pissed her off even further—the magazine’s gift of an ostrich-skin purse was returned immediately by the animal-friendly actor. Hey, even a great mag like Seventeen makes mistakes, but Sarah deserves a round of applause for setting it straight.

Helen TuckerIt isn’t just genetics that Helen Tucker has to thank for her incredibly amazing body, because we’re sure her vegan diet has helped work that magic, as well. Helen is a model for Bisou Bisou, Parasuco jeans, and Becca swimwear and has most recently been featured in Maxim magazine. This hottie doesn’t just talk the talk, either, as evidenced by her line of vegan baked goods. Helen’s Sweetcakes are a huge hit with the health-conscious and animal-friendly people of L.A. I don’t think we’ll need to twist your arm too much to try out her treats should you venture into that neck of the woods.

Carrie-Anne MossTrinity—or some of you may still remember her by the name of Carrie-Anne Moss—became so attached to cows during a trip to France that she cut meat from her diet. The small town offered her little to do other than to take long walks on a path through an area that several cows populated. Explains Carrie-Anne, “They so reminded me of my dogs, in terms of their spirit. It stopped me from eating meat for a while.” So, let’s get this straight—she’s talented, hot, and able to make a clear connection between what’s on her plate and who’s walking beside her? Man, she’s even cooler than we thought.

Reese WitherspoonIf you think you’re above going to see a movie whose color scheme is pink and whose actors are bubbly blondes with lots of money, we understand. But don’t mistake Legally Blonde 2 for a movie without a message. PETA staffers and other animal rights activists were blown away that a movie of this magnitude (think “mainstream America”) is based solely on an animal rights message. Lead character Elle Woods, played by animal-friendly actor Reese Witherspoon, takes vivisectors to task when she heads to Washington, D.C., to campaign for a ban on cosmetics testing on animals. Don’t believe us? Check out PETA.org for further details on the movie or go check it out for yourself.
