On Our Radar

Pop quiz: What would you expect to find Avril Lavigne doing in her spare time? Taking in a show? Shopping with “friend” Deryck Whibley? Or eating at a fancy-schmancy restaurant? The answer’s probably going to surprise some of you, but truth be told, Avril likes to cook vegetarian dishes in her spare time. We know, we were surprised at first, too, but think about it, some of her band members are vegetarian, so it was only a matter of time before it rubbed off on her. She admits that she does like to eat her share of junk food from time to time—who doesn’t really?—but the pop-punk princess adds, "90 percent of the time I eat a vegan diet." Cool.

Ashlee Simpson’s on-again, off-again main squeeze Ryan Cabrera is heatin’ up the charts and lots of hearts with the singles "True" and "All the Way Down" from his Atlantic Records debut Take It All Away. You can’t turn on the radio without hearing those songs at least 10 times a day, seriously. The Dallas native worked with Goo Goo Dolls’ John Rzenick on the album, which explains why "On the Way Down" is very Goo Goo Dolls-esque ... in case you were wondering. Ryan, who was in a punk band in high school, says that he was inspired by Dave Matthews Band to create the music he plays today and that he’s also inspired by dogs. Ryan says, "Dogs are amazing; they’re so loyal." Aw, just like the legions of fans who are rushing out to buy his album.

Joss Stone is making the rounds here in the U.S., celebrating the success of her second release Mind, Body, and Soul ... and soul is something she’s definitely got. That voice of hers is earth-shaking, as was her rendition of Janis Joplin’s "Piece of My Heart" at this year’s Grammy Awards. But spending so much time away from her home in Devon, England, causes the teen songbird to miss her beloved dogs. Joss admits that she’s always loved animals: "When I was little, we lived in the countryside and I was obsessed with animals." She says she even sang "Amazing Grace" to the cows and horses ... lucky cows and horses.

Henry Rollins recently revealed to KERRANG! magazine that people would be surprised to know that he likes kids, handicapped people, the elderly, and animals. But that’s no surprise to us, and it shouldn’t be a surprise to his fans either, because you can typically find the Rollins Band frontman, sometime actor, writer, and spoken word master (man, he’s been busy since his Black Flag days) pissing off the powers that be while sticking it to the man and fighting for social justice. And if you haven’t caught this vegetarian jack-of-all-trades on VH1 or MTV dishing about pop culture, set the Tivo now, because his ever-insightful snippets are damn funny. He’s on the road right now, so a lucky few of you may even get the chance to see him performing spoken word right in your very own town. Jump at the chance, we would.
