Kittie

Since their debut album, Spit, went gold in ’99, Kittie have been through a lot, including selling almost a million albums, coheadlining the Ozzfest side stage, and getting to play on stage with some of their musical heroes. Their newest release and hardest album to date, Until the End, shows how much the girls have changed over the years. We were lucky enough to find out that the girls had a softer side, though, when they sat down to discuss animal abuse with us.

What animal issue do you feel strongly about?

Mercedes: I don’t think we should be testing on animals. I don’t think it’s right at all. I mean, we should just test on murderers instead of innocent animals.

Morgan: Yeah, I mean, animals are cute!

Have you guys heard about Iams? And the testing they are doing on dogs and cats in laboratories?

Lisa: Yeah, I saw a feature on the PETA site [peta2.com] about how Morrissey hates Iams for what they are doing to animals.

Jen: I had a friend who fed her dog Iams. The dog got really fat and unhealthy and had to be euthanized. Testing on those dogs and cats is so unnecessary, there’s no need at all! Fuck Iams!

And fuck KFC, too. You can quote me on that. The dirty bird.

When I got my laptop and the wireless hooked up at my house, I wanted to try it out, and the first video I found was a KFC video from PETA. The conditions were awful. The chickens couldn’t even walk right. The whole thing was so disgustingly F’d up. They don’t need to be torturing chickens, those people need to be run over by trucks! I am boycotting KFC because they are treating chickens so fucked up. I’ll never eat there again!

LisaMorgan: I just wanted to say that as a Canadian, I find the seal hunt to be disgusting. Wearing fur is disgusting! God, I wouldn’t want someone wearing my skin, and besides, I am not Ed Gein [serial killer of Texas Chainsaw Massacre fame, he sewed the skin of his victims into various articles of clothing (e.g., the “breast vest”)].

So Lisa, what about you? You said that you’re vegan, right? Why are you vegan, and how did it happen?

Lisa: Yeah, I have been vegan for four years and was vegetarian for three years before that. I went vegan because of animals. I got leaflets, stickers, and videos from some friends and decided that I didn’t want to eat animals anymore. It isn’t hard to be vegan. I mean, it was a bit hard for the first year or so, but now it’s no problem at all.

Morgan: Yeah, we make sure she’s taken care of. It’s easy these days.

Lisa: I first went vegan for the animals, but I am so much healthier as a vegan, and I feel like I am doing something for the animals! I love PETA2, and pita bread, and falafel.

Kittie: We want stickers and leaflets to give out at our shows!!
