Dinner and a Movie With Silverstein

They’re mind-bendingly good, they’re 100 percent vegetarian, and they’re getting more popular by the minute. We’re talking about fried “chicken” patties of course, but now that we think about it, the same could be said for our old friends (and one of our favorite bands) Silverstein. The boys took some time off their busy touring schedule to catch up with us and to enjoy the amazing vegan chicken sandwiches at Cora restaurant, which is, conveniently enough, just a few minutes away from peta2 HQ. As we discovered, all the members of Silverstein are extremely eloquent—and often quite moving—on the topic of sandwiches and other lunch foods, but they also have a whole lot to say about the meat industry, taking care of your singing voice, life on the road, and (if you’re feeling up to it) how to change the world …

After sandwiches, a round of vegan ice cream, and a tour of peta2’s secret underground hideout (OK, whatever, our second-floor offices), the Silverstein boys went on to play a blistering set for the local fans featuring songs from their new album, Discovering the Waterfront. But before they left us, they told us exactly what they thought about KFC, which is responsible for live scalding, lifelong crippling, and other horrific abuses of more than 850 million birds every year. Shane’s solution to the problem is simple and effective: “Contact KFC directly and say, ‘Look, we aren’t going to support you anymore if you continue to do this.’” We couldn’t agree more. You can join Silverstein and help to make a huge difference in the lives of millions of chickens right now by signing the petition below to let KFC know that its cruelty to animals will not be tolerated.

To sum up: KFC is gross, it’s cruel, and it’s going to hear about it. The guys in Silverstein promise that you’ll enjoy their favorite recipe, listed below, much more than your average bucket of crippled chicken.

Fried ‘Chicken,’ Silverstein-Style

This is our cruelty-free version of a Southern favorite. Serve it with freshly baked biscuits and mashed potatoes for a complete meal.

1 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. onion powder
1 tsp. pepper
1 tsp. garlic powder
2 cups unbleached white flour
4 Tbsp. nutritional yeast (optional)
3 Tbsp. yellow mustard
1/2 cup water
2 Tbsp. baking powder
1 lb. mock chicken (try Morningstar Farms Meal Starters Chik’n Strips*, Lightlife Smart Menu Chick’n Strips*, or Worthington Chic-Ketts**)
3 1/2 cups vegetable oil

  • Mix together the salt, onion powder, pepper, garlic powder, flour, and nutritional yeast in a deep bowl.
  • In a separate bowl, dilute the mustard with the water.
  • Add 1/3 cup of the flour mixture to the mustard mixture and stir. Add the baking powder to the dry flour mixture and mix.
  • Dip chunks of the mock chicken into the mustard batter, then drop each chunk into the flour mixture and coat with the desired amount of “crust.”
  • Fry the chunks in hot oil on medium-high heat in a large skillet or deep fryer until crispy and golden brown, turning as needed.

Makes 4 servings
