Sky Eats Airplane

by Shan Phillips

What's four parts Texas, one part Virginia, and 100 percent buzzworthy? If you haven't been in a music coma for the past year or so, you'd know that the answer is Equal Vision electro-metalcore band Sky Eats Airplane! From Alternative Press to Outburn, I can barely open an alternative music magazine without seeing a great review of their sophomore effort, 2008's Sky Eats Airplane.

Somewhere between constant touring, photo shoots, and great reviews, guitarist Lee Duck and bassist Johno Erickson found time to chat with us about their favorite vegetarian food, the environment, and why you shouldn't wear fur or leather.

Here's Lee and Johno in their own words:

peta2: Are there any vegetarian or vegan meals that you enjoy?
Johno: The first time we ever went out with the label that ended up signing us, they took us to a vegan place that I didn't even know existed in Fort Worth, the Spiral Diner. That was really, really good. I don't remember what I got though, but I know it was good as hell! Oh, wait … some seitan bean or something like that. I don't know what it's actually called, but it tastes pretty legit—I liked it.

peta2: We know that your label has many vegan and vegetarian employees who are into the animal rights movement. Have you guys picked up anything from them?
Lee: They're usually just all business with us, so on that notion, they're like, "Hey, do you want to go eat? We'll take you to a vegan restaurant," and we're like, "All right, since you're paying, we'll try this out." We're from Texas, we're Texas boys, we're not really used to this kind of stuff, but you know, it's definitely a new experience for us that we're open to eat and enjoy.

peta2: We currently have an environmental campaign, Meat's Not Green, that addresses a report from the U.N. citing factory farming as the number one cause of climate change. Factory farming produces more greenhouse-gas emissions than the entire transportation industry combined. Were you aware of that?
Johno: I think I read that. I think I saw that in one of your pamphlets I was reading while I was eating one day. I never really thought about it or knew about it until I read the pamphlet, and I thought that was pretty weird, just a bunch of stuff that I didn't know, but it makes sense. I trust you on it.

Lee: I think that's pretty shocking for a lot of people, you know—since everyone's so worried about fuel, and so worried about things of that matter, that they don't even realize how much something they're just going to throw in their mouth is going to hurt the environment.

peta2: The U.S. imports the majority of its fur from China, where PETA has gone undercover and filmed workers in the fur industry skinning animals while they're still alive—including dogs and cats. How do you feel about the fur industry?
Johno: That's why I never wore fur in the first place. I don't want to wear some animal. I don't think I own anything that's leather or anything like that. I have fake leather belts. I'm not vegan or vegetarian or anything, but it still feels weird wearing it, and I don't think fur looks cool.

Lee: And biker gangs aren't my style, so I'm not going to be wearing leather jackets.

Johno: Yeah, I'm not in the Outsiders or anything like that. That's that movie, right? I don't know why people still wear leather jackets. Those things look stupid as hell. Just throwing that out there.

peta2: Lastly, any suggestions for your fans who might be interested in animal rights or who want to get involved in the issues and educate themselves?
Johno: If you want to get educated, you're on the right site. Past that, I guess pick up all the stuff you can get at things like Warped Tour or any of the big fests that go through, and don't wear fur or leather, because they just look stupid. Just throwing that out there. Again.

Don't you love it when your favorite band doesn't hold back? I do! Be sure to check out Sky Eats Airplane's tour dates to see them in action in a city near you. And remember, no fur or leather at Sky Eats Airplane shows—Lee and Johno might call you out, and animals will never forgive you! Before you do that, make sure you join Lee and Johno in our fight against fur by signing our pledge to be fur-free, and ask your friends to do the same!
