Saves the Day Tour Diary

Chris, lead singer of Saves the Day, is checking in with PETA2.com while on tour with Green Day and Blink 182.

Update from May 31, 2002

PETA2 Agent: OK, spill it! What’s it like touring with Blink 182 and Green Day? Have you had a chance to jam with them at all? Do you guys hang together?

Chris: It doesn’t make sense to me that we’re on this tour. I can remember exactly where I was when I bought Dookie almost 10 years ago. I can remember listening to it over and over. And now, somehow, we’re here, on the road with both of these beautiful bands, and my brain just can’t compute. I just can’t think of our band as being of the same caliber as Blink and Green Day. They’re massive. We’re supposed to be playing cramped rooms with sweat and graffiti on the walls, not gigantic arenas and semi-stadiums. And all the guys in Blink 182 and Green Day are so nice. They are so down-to-Earth. Just dudes playin’ tunes. It makes it much easier to adjust to this bizarre world when there’s no attitude to sift through. It feels like some strange traveling summer camp ... with tattoos. It just blows my mind walking around the shows each day. Why are we here? Shouldn’t the security have kicked us out already? And why are the guys in the bands so nice? Aren’t rock stars supposed to be obsessed with themselves? Well, this is so gorgeous. And my life keeps getting more and more surreal. And I’m just so thankful that Blink 182 and Green Day are happy to have us be a part of this monumental event. Pop Disaster 2002 is by far the most exciting and awe-inspiring tour I’ve ever been involved with. But I just can’t get over the fact that we’re actually here. I’m now thoroughly convinced that life is but a dream.

Agent: How is the food on the tour? Are there vegan options for you guys? What is your favorite food on tour?

Chris: The catering is so good on this tour. I can understand why Bob Dylan has been on an unending tour for, like, 10 years. The food is almost better than home cookin’. And we’re treated so well. Every day, we are fed lunch and dinner with a hot vegan option at each meal. So far my favorites have been roasted tempeh kebabs and the various tofu dishes. But the food I munch on the most is a bag of raw nuts that I purchased before we left. And there is so much delicious fruit every day. I usually have red grapes and strawberries for my first meal and then whatever vegan option they have for dinner with a huge salad. So, I’m not goin’ hungry, and it’s so easy to maintain the veggie diet. Hope all is well wherever you be.
