What could Davey Havok and the boys from My Chemical Romance possibly have in common with Lindsay Lohan? If you think nothing, then take a closer look. They have all been spotted rockin’ Urban Decay cosmetics.
To further investigate this phenomenon, we decided to go straight to the source: Wende Zomnir, executive creative director for Urban Decay—aka “Ms. Urban Decay.” Not only did we find out how makeup has brought together boys who wear eyeliner and Hollywood “it” girls, we also found out that Urban Decay is one of the most animal-friendly cosmetics companies ever!
So what are the hottest trends in vegan products these days?
The 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencils are huge, and our brushes have always been really popular, because they’re completely cruelty-free and work really well. The Heavy Metal Glitter Eyeliners are a really hot product right now, and of course our eye shadows are always big.
So do all the boys in bands go for the black eyeliner look?
Oh yeah—up and down, those guys love that black eyeliner.
Why do you think it’s important to have a “vegan looks” section on UrbanDecay.com?
Well, a lot of our customers are vegans, and we wanted to give them some options. There are plenty of cruelty-free lines out there, but there aren’t a lot of companies that say, “Hey, all the ingredients in this particular product are completely vegan.” If you are vegan, you can make a choice with your conscience and not have to wonder what the ingredients are.
Why does Urban Decay have a policy against testing its products on animals?
Well, it all started from the very beginning of the company. We always have had this policy. One of our founders has always been really into animal causes, and that was just always part of our culture.
Do you think that other companies should follow Urban Decay’s lead and not test on animals?
Fortunately, I think there are a lot of places that are not testing on animals anymore, and I agree that it’s a great way to go.
How did you come up with the ultra-cute cruelty-free symbol—the “Marley Approved” purple paw?
Marley is my dog, and he has been coming to the office probably for the whole time the company’s been in existence. I think he was just a year old when we started the company, so he’s kind of our mascot dog. That’s how we came up with “Marley Approved,” because he’s sort of our spokesdog. Now we have many, many dogs here.
So people can take their dogs to work with them?
Absolutely. We have a “dogs welcomed” policy.
