When you're shopping, just check the labels to make sure that leather, wool, silk, fur, and down aren't listed among the materials. Scan for keywords such as "man-made materials," "synthetic," or "faux," and you should be in the clear!
If you're confused, ask a salesperson if the item is made of real leather or fur. Often, you can tell by the price. You can usually get faux fur, faux leather, and other synthetic materials for a fraction of the price of the real (aka "cruel and kind of gross") versions.
