No More Bearskin Hats!

We all know that hats are lovely – there are big ones, small ones, some as big as your head – but they’re not quite so lovely when they’re made out of the fur of bears. Yes, those silly hats which the Queen’s Guards wear are made from the fur of Canadian black bears. These bears suffer agonising deaths when they are shot or when they bleed to death in traps, and they sometimes leave behind nursing cubs who then starve to death. I mean, really – have you ever heard anything so ridiculous? They are killing bears … for hats!

PETA is asking the queen and the Ministry of Defence (MoD) to switch to a cruelty-free synthetic material for the hats, but while the queen and MoD are “discussing” it, bears are still being killed. This is where you can make a difference! We need you to get behind this campaign and spread the word so that we see an end to this cruel “tradition”. Here are some ways for you to help save the Canadian bears from their miserable ends and earn some free stuff for yourself for your trouble! You have to be a member of the Street Team to earn that free stuff, of course. So if you haven’t already, sign up now and start reeking havoc in the UK!

To help you with your efforts, please request free campaign materials here and feel free to e-mail peta2@peta2.com with any questions.

Hand out leaflets all over Britain!
Before you go off shopping with your friends, take an hour out to help animals by spreading the word that those ridiculous hats worn by the guards are made from the skins of dead bears. You can get a pack of leaflets posted to you, or print some yourself and get started right away! After you’ve handed out leaflets everywhere you can think of, submit a report using this online form or e-mail StreetTeam@peta2.com and let us know how it went.

Write to that lot in government.
Get writing for the bears! Send letters and e-mails to your MP, to the queen and to the MoD telling them you do not support the violent killing of bears and that you want to see a synthetic material used for the hats. If you are a British citizen, you have a say in what happens here, so make your voice heard.

Contact your MP here.

Collect signatures on peta2 UK’s “Save My Skin” petition.
Print out these petitions, then take them everywhere you go and get people signed up – get all your classmates at school on board and collect signatures outside shows and anywhere else you can think of. See peta2’s guide to getting sign-ups for some more tips. After you’ve filled up a few pages with names and e-mail addresses, send them to:

Write letters to the editor.
Use the “Letters to the Editor” section of local newspapers and national magazines like Bliss, Sugar and Cosmo to inform people about how bears are killed in order to make the guards’ hats. Tell readers how they can help save the bears, and be sure to recommend that they visit peta2.com. If your letter gets printed, send us a printed copy of (or a link to) it, and we’ll give you a free “Save My Skin” stencil as well as bonus points.

Use stickers and stencils to spread the word.
Stick peta2’s new “Bear Hugs, Not Bear Hats” stickers all over your stuff, from your school books to your school shoes! If you don’t have any stickers, order some here. Or, if you’re feeling particularly artsy, make a stencil using this template and spray-paint the message onto your clothes and books—we want you to be a walking billboard to help bears!

Be the “bear”.
PETA often needs people to help at demos around the country. Join the peta2 Street Team so that we can alert you about upcoming demos in your area. If you’re lucky, you might get to dress up and be the PETA “bear”!
