Easter Shouldn’t Be About Cruelty

Each year on Easter, families come together to celebrate the holiday season with pastel colors and the smell of spring all around. No matter what your opinion may be on the Easter Bunny, there’s one thing most everyone can agree on: Cruelty to animals is nothing to celebrate. This Easter, let your friends, classmates, brothers, and sisters know that decorating and eating eggs is cruel (and gross too). What else are you going to do? Hang out with your crazy uncle?

Hens raised for their eggs on factory farms live in filthy, cramped conditions. As many as 11 birds are packed into each mesh cage, where they are unable to turn around or even spread a wing. To prevent hens from pecking one another to death from the stress of being so crowded together, farmers cut off the ends of the birds’ beaks with hot blades. Hens who can no longer produce eggs quickly enough are shipped to slaughter or even buried alive. Hens aren’t the only casualties of the egg industry; because they are unable to lay eggs, male chicks are viewed as useless and are killed in high-powered grinders or suffocated in garbage bags when they are just 1 day old.

Your mission this Easter is to print out a stack of peta2’s “Where Do Easter Eggs Come From” leaflets and give them to the egg-eaters in your life. Drop one in each of your friends lockers at school, hand them out in home ec. class, and leave a few on the picnic table when your family eats on Easter Sunday. If you don’t have access to a printer, ask your friends or sympathetic teachers if you can use theirs, or just print some out in the library.

After you hand out all your leaflets, e-mail or text StreetTeam@peta2.com telling us what you did, and you’ll get 750 Street Team points. Include a photo of your Easter activism with your report and we’ll up it to 1,500 points. Chickens will thank you for saving them from being tortured, and you’ll earn free peta2 merch for yourself. Everyone wins!
