Gathering sign-ups for the peta2 e-news is a great way to grab a whole lot of points for yourself and help a ton of animals at the same time. We’re talking about thousands heremeaning free T-shirts, messenger bags, posters, vegan marshmallows, and hoodies.
If you’ve got a spare hour and a clipboard, you should get in on this deal. We’ll give you 250 points for trying and 50 additional points for each person you get to sign up. Just 100 signups (which should be a breeze at large events) will get you 5,250 points—enough for patches, books, music, stickers, and even T-shirts—so find an event with a lot of people and get to work!
You don’t need permission from the venue or the band to gather e-mail addresses from people who are waiting in a line before a show starts. You don’t even have to tell us ahead of time if you plan on doing this. All you have to do is approach individuals and ask them to sign up. You can do this at a large festival you’re attending or outside a show that you’re not even going to. Check Web sites such as Pollstar.com and Ticketmaster.com for info on upcoming concerts in your area.
Show up at the venue about 30 minutes before doors open with a clipboard, a few pens, and a stack of peta2 sign-up sheets. If you are attending the event, just have someone save your place in line or a spot inside.
Bring some PETA literature or stickers if you have some, but make getting sign-ups your number-one priority. Order a pack of stickers and leaflets a few weeks in advance, or print your own if you can’t wait.
We’ve found that it is more effective to gather e-mail addresses than to leaflet because we can e-mail people with information again and again and again. Walk up and down the line outside the venue while people are waiting to get in and ask everyone to sign up. Hey, what’s the worst they can do? Say “no”? When that happens, just move on to the next person and forget about them.
You don’t need to go it alone. You can bring as many friends with you as you like. Even if your friends don’t care about animals like you do, they still might like free stuff and want to help. Arm them with clipboards and pens, tell them what to say, and send them down the line, too.
There are a lot of different ways to get people to sign up, but we’ve found that letting people know about upcoming or current contests on peta2.com works wonders. And remember to talk about how much all the bands love peta2that way people who don’t already care about animals will sign up to hear all the latest news about their favorite band, and we can teach them about animal rights later.
Checklist:
•Bring a stack of peta2 sign-up sheets. Make sure you bring at least five sheetsthat’s 1,000 points per sheet, plus 250 for just showing up. And remember, each sign-up is worth another 50 points, so the more sheets you have, the more points you can get.
•Don’t forget your clipboard and pens.
•Do you know when the doors are opening? Show up a half an hour before they open.
•Do you know what you’re going to say to get people to sign up? (“Sign up to win a free iPod.”)
After the show, type up the e-mail addresses, e-mail them to us, and we’ll hook you up with the Street Team points.
