The peta2 employees have been working day and night. All the votes have been counted and recounted, and we are pleased to announce the winners in the first Most Vegetarian-Friendly UK University rankings. It has been a hard-fought battle! All the universities on the list deserved to be in the top five, but there can only be one winner. We saw some fantastic entries from around the UK and some of the best examples of vegetarian and vegan dishes imaginable. So without further ado, here is the list of the top vegetarian UK universities for 2008.
#1 Nottingham University
Working alongside Vegsoc – Nottingham University Vegetarian and Vegan Society, the university offers at least one vegan option daily, including kusherie – Egyptian rice and lentils served with a rich tomato sauce. Furthermore, the university has recently applied for Vegan Society accreditation with the hope of becoming the first English university to become accredited! The future can only be better, with plans for a new, improved range of vegan sandwiches, more main courses and regular options in halls of residence.
#2 Glasgow University
The only university in the UK to be Vegan Society-accredited, Glasgow University has come in second. With the Vegan Society of the University of Glasgow pushing the way and dishes like falafel and olives with hummus and tzatziki, Glasgow truly is one of the most forward-thinking universities in the UK – and maybe even the world.
#3 York University
York University is a collegiate school, and each of the colleges has their own vegetarian and vegan options, like carrot and cashew roast with sweet potatoes and marinated beetroot. Being Vegetarian Society-accredited, you can guarantee a great meal at this university because of the society's "V" next to the dishes. Another awesome thing about York is that Vanbrugh College is increasing their vegan options and launching a range of homemade vegan cakes.
#4 Leeds University
Leeds has worked really hard this year, with an article in the Yorkshire Post encouraging students and locals alike and with dishes like nut roast with mushroom sauce. Leeds is making a great effort to cater to their vegetarian students, and with some great vegetarian dishes in the canteen and Tokyo Diner in the city centre, there is no way they could not be listed in the top 5.
#5 Bristol University
Bristol is one of the most forward-thinking cities in the UK, and their university is living up to that name. Their menu consists of some outstanding dishes for vegetarians and vegans, like chickpea tagine. The University of Bristol Vegetarian and Vegan Society is working to provide even more choices for vegetarians and vegans.
Do you feel left out? Well, let us know if your university is a great place for vegetarians and vegans. You never know – next year it could be your school!
