Officer Accused of Punching Dog

According to news sources, Fort Myers Police Officer George Sanford was investigated after fellow officers reported him for punching his K9 partner, Euro, in the face during a narcotics training exercise!

Reportedly, when the K9 officers were being rewarded for good work by being allowed to play tug-of-war with a towel, Euro tried to grab the towel from Sanford’s hand, at which point Sanford allegedly punched the dog in between the eyes, causing him to yelp, cringe, and urinate (likely because of fear) on the floor!

Sanford was reportedly found to be in violation of the Fort Myers Police Department’s policies, and it was apparently recommended that he undergo counseling and additional training. However, Sanford has reportedly been employed as a K9 handler for nine years! Seriously, what additional training should he need to understand that he shouldn’t punch a dog?!

Help us keep Euro safe by urging Fort Myers officials to reassign Sanford to non-animalrelated duties only! Please keep in mind that this agency has a good track record of humane treatment of animals, so be sure to keep comments respectful.

I live in Fort Myers, and as far as I know nothing’s been done about this… I didn’t even know about it until now. </3

Got an email back. How nice of the Police Chief to get back to me!
    Thank you for your email
In reference to recent media regarding our police K-9 Euro, please know that the complaint was taken with great concern and investigated thoroughly. In addition, Euro was removed from the officer’s care during the investigation. Euro was evaluated by a veterinarian as well as an outside police K-9 trainer. There were no signs of physical abuse and no documented history of abuse with Euro, the officer’s previous police K-9 or his family pets. The K-9 trainer recommended the officer and Euro to participate in structured remedial training. Euro was just recertified and the team is performing well together and to appropriate police standards. I will continue to monitor their progress. I stand by our investigation that was thorough, transparent and fair. The investigations are public record and open to inspection. Thank you for your email and I will continue to monitor closely.

I can’t believe that he’s copying the emails back to us.. If you look at KateStarrFire’s comment and mine:

This is ridiculous! no one should even still be working with K-9’s if they abuse them!

I agree with you! He should not be handling a K-9 who works very hard and gets punched in the face! I would put the officer in anger management classes and have 5 hours of community service!

I have experience in training police dogs and this officer has no business being a K-9 handler. There should be a trust and a bond between these 2 that can compare with no other relationship. He not only jeopardized his dog’s health but it’s trust level. If this was any other human officer, he would be disciplined. Had he been a citizen and hit this dog he could have been brought up on charges of assaulting a police officer. This man has no business being a K-9 handler and may not be fit to even stay on as a police officer. I hope the city does the right thing…I have my doubts but there is hope.
