Hometown: Lancaster, California—not to be confused with the Lancaster in Pennsylvania, which is probably a much more interesting place.
Favorite bands/music: I grew up around the music of the '80s that my parents listened to, but these days I listen to all kinds of things—primarily post-hardcore since that's what pretty much everyone was into where I grew up. Some favorites of mine are Bring Me the Horizon, Broadway, Circa Survive, City and Colour, The Color Morale, Coyote Theory, Daft Punk, Death Cab for Cutie, The Devil Wears Prada, The Early November, Geographer, Hands Like Houses, I the Mighty, Lights, Of Monsters and Men, Panic! at the Disco, Paper Route, Tides of Man, Yellowcard, Yuna, and 1997.
About me: I'm the oldest of four boys, with the youngest being sixteen years younger than I am. I've played sports my whole life, which has made me into a gigantic sports nerd, along with everyone else in my family. I've played the drums since the seventh grade, and music is a huge part of my life. I also have a degree in English, which means that I'm constantly reading and spending too much time in bookstores.
I like: Listening to music, jamming with my friends, running trails, Junot Díaz, Albert Camus, James Joyce, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, Mark Twain, any literature from the Romantic era, the Anaheim Ducks, the L.A. Galaxy, dim lighting, clean kitchens, walking dogs, hiking, Doctor Who, anything with Ricky Gervais, going to shows, and the Spanish language, even though I'm terrible at speaking it.
I dislike: Being cold, being indoors for too long, the sound of people chewing gum, places that have crappy parking, sitting in traffic, and the Los Angeles Kings (gotta love rivalries).
Why I went vegan: In high school, I ran cross country and one my teammates said that he was going to try being vegetarian because he thought it might help him be a better runner. I thought it was worth a shot, so I did it, too. It was only later that I started to realize all the terrible things that animals go through just to be food on our plates or so that we can have a glass of milk or a leather jacket. I remember standing in my kitchen while I was in college, right after I had put Parmesan cheese on my pasta, and thinking about how easy it would be not to and to instead make compassionate choices by using alternatives. As I started my journey as a vegan and an activist in college, I also became pretty darn skilled in being vegan on a budget, which is something that I'm thankful for now (especially when people try to say that being vegan is more expensive!).
Companion animals: I have a corgi mix named Pixel. He, like me, hates being cold and will sneak into my bed at night and hide under the covers. He also has a hilarious (but endearing) underbite.
Random facts: I get lost everywhere I go (seriously), my favorite movies as a kid were The Mighty Ducks and Balto, my favorite color is maroon, and I'm extremely proud of the fact that my college's mascot is an anteater.
