What made you decide to go vegan?
I was vegetarian for four years prior to going vegan. As I educated myself more on the subject, I began to make the connection between cruelty and the consumption of all animal products, not just meat. Going vegan was probably the single most important choice I ever made. There are so many pros to living a vegan lifestyle. I enjoy peace of mind knowing that I’m not involved in the needless suffering of animals, and I’m happy knowing that I am doing something to protect them. Physically, I also feel better and healthier. I have more energy, I rarely get sick, and I haven’t experienced a headache in 24 years (I got them often before I was vegan). Really, I see so many reasons to be vegan and none against it. It’s a no-brainer for me.
What’s your favorite thing about peta2?
Being a horror fan, I liked peta2’s campaign “Flesh Is For Zombies.” That’s spot-on what we’re about at The Vegan Zombie. If you eat animal flesh, you’re a zombie. The only way to prevent zombie infection, aside from getting bitten, is to go vegan! That’s our storyline.
Young people get a lot of practice for the zombie apocalypse by running everywhere: to class, to concerts, to work, etc. What are your favorite vegan snacks for people on the go?
I always start my day off with a fruit smoothie—the recipe is included in our book. It fills me up and gives me the energy I need. I also recommend whole foods as quick snacks over processed foods. Bananas, dates, kale chips, and nuts are good choices.
What advice do you have for new vegans?
When I was younger and first went vegan, I looked at it as a fun and exciting challenge. I was on a mission to find ways to recreate all my favorite dishes to be vegan. That alone is enough to make you never want to go back! Learn everything you can about the foods you eat. There is so much information out there but also misinformation that you have to watch out for. If you’re having trouble, there are countless reputable websites where you can post your challenges and get honest feedback from like-minded people. The resources are endless.
