Halfway through her meal recently, a woman in Australia found what appears to be live maggots squirming around in chicken tenders that she purchased from the well-known supermarket Aldi.

According to an Aldi spokesperson, after the woman’s father contacted the supermarket, it launched a “high-priority investigation” with the chicken tenders supplier.

If this story disgusts you, take a moment to think about this: Maggots (fly larvae) are attracted to flesh. In a society in which animal tissue is ground up, processed, and formed into non-animal shapes, it’s easy to forget that what we’re eating is actually the decaying body parts of a once-living being. Incidents like this, which aren’t limited to just chicken, are a reminder that it’s time to ditch the meat and go vegan.
