PETA U.K. has teamed up with International Animal Rescue to release footage from Mauritius—an island known for its mountains, reefs, and award-winning beaches—showing that dogs are killed in cruel and painful ways by the government-funded Mauritius Society for Animal Welfare.

Tourists who visit the island may not realize that while they’re relaxing on their vacation, just miles from their hotel, dogs might be experiencing horrific deaths at the hands of the government. The footage shows that workers violently capture a large number of the animals and then cruelly kill as many as 20 of them in full view of each other. One worker throws the terrified dogs to the ground and stands on them to hold them in place, while another gives them a lethal injection—in an apparent attempt to puncture their hearts—without any anesthetics.

After being injected, the dogs stagger around in agony and eventually collapse. The other trapped dogs who see this frantically try to escape by climbing the gates and walls of the kennel.

Even though this procedure is condemned by the international veterinary community because it often causes dogs to die slowly and in extreme pain—and international animal-welfare groups have repeatedly offered to help the country—the Mauritian government is still using these cruel and ineffective methods to try to reduce the number of stray dogs. But the only humane and effective way to reduce their population is to prevent more puppies from being born in the first place by implementing a spay/neuter program.
