Miley Cyrus is well known for dropping ink on her body as a tribute to some of the things, people, and animals that have a special meaning for her: Vegemite, Billy Ray Cyrus, an avocado, and Saturn are just a few of her tattoo inspirations. Last month, the “Malibu” singer and longtime vegan dedicated space on her arm for a beautiful tattoo of her beloved adopted Shetland sheepdog, Emu. You might have spotted him with the singer in her new music video!
Emu isn’t the only companion animal Miley’s honored in this awesome way. She’s gotten a tattoo to memorialize her pup Floyd, who passed away in 2014, and another of her loveable blowfish, Pablow. She also chose to honor him with a song and video that she shared on her Facebook page. In the video, Miley reminisces about her love for her fish and also reflects on keeping an animal meant to live in the ocean confined to a tank: “If I could do it again, I’d release you to the sea ’cause I can’t bear to see something so wild just die in a tank.”
Miley has an amazing track record of doing rad things for animals—whether it’s writing a song celebrating the life of her beloved blowfish or urging her fans not to wear fur—and she isn’t afraid to tell the world how much she loves and respects animals.
More than 6 million lost, abandoned, or otherwise homeless animals end up in animal shelters in the U.S. each year. If you’re looking for a dog—or any other animal—to welcome into your home, please don’t go to a pet store. Always adopt, never buy.
In honor of Miley and Emu, please don’t buy dogs or support pet stores that sell them.
