We all know that eating animals such as cows, pigs, chickens, and fish is wrong and just plain weird. But what about some of the other animals people eat? This list takes the notion of eating dead flesh to a whole new level—you won’t believe that people eat these animals:
We already know that snakes suffer in the exotic-skins industry, but did you know that people also EAT snakes?! Insane, right? Don’t they know that snakes are loving and caring animals? Female pythons wrap their bodies around their eggs and shiver to heat themselves up and keep their eggs warm. #TooCute! In cruel events such as rattlesnake roundups, snakes are decapitated and have the skin ripped off their bodies, which is then fried and eaten—GROSS!
I don’t know about you, but I’ve never looked at an octopus and thought, “Man, I would love to have those moist tentacles slide down my throat.” And yet, there are people who do just that and eat these remarkable animals—some are even cooked while they’re STILL ALIVE! Octopuses and squids are the ninjas of the sea, with their super-impressive ability to camouflage themselves and blend in with whatever’s around them. They even decorate their dens with stuff that they find on the ocean floor, such as bottle caps and stones—just like you decorate your room with things that you like. These squishy little guys are even considered “honorary vertebrates” under British law because of how intelligent they are. Why don’t we try to keep these Stephen Hawkings of the ocean off our plates and out of our mouths and enjoy this vegan calamari instead?
If you’re like me, you grew up with an adorable turtle companion. My little guy was named Chip, because he had a little chip on his shell. (I wasn’t very creative back in the day.) I loved taking him out to play, feeding him lettuce, and spending time with this adorable little guy. Living with him made it very hard for me to accept that people actually KILL and EAT these cuties! Turtles who are killed for food have their heads yanked out of their shell so that they can be chopped off, or their throats are slit—all while they’re still conscious. Even PETCO’s turtle supplier ships more than 2 million baby turtles to China annually for slaughter and consumption! Several species of turtles can live to be more than a hundred years old in the wild, including the American box turtle.
Somewhere in the world, there’s a group of kids daring each other to eat a grasshopper they just found on the playground. When we get older, the thought of eating bugs grosses us out, but most of us don’t realize that people are still doing it! Food colorings such as carmine, cochineal extract, and Red 4 are made out of crushed female cochineal insects. About 70,000 of these little beetles have to be killed to produce just 1 pound of this gross red dye. Don’t support the killing of these insects, and avoid buying food that has any of these ingredients in it!
5. Cats and dogs
Would you be able to sit down at the table and enjoy a meal in which your cat or dog was the main course? Now, we ask you guys this question a lot because we want you to realize that there’s NO difference between your companion animals and the animals who are slaughtered for food. But this time, I’m asking it literally: Would you be able to eat a dog or a cat? Well, there are people eating them right now—and we think that’s pretty messed up. Dogs and cats are loving animals and ones you should spend your life with (just be sure to adopt!), and the thought of someone slaughtering thousands of them for food is just sickening! Does it make you angry? Because it should!
In the end, not only is eating animals messed up, it’s also weird and gross. All animals feel pain—just like you and I do—so the best thing that we can do for our health, the environment, and the billions of animals who are slaughtered every day is to leave meat, eggs, and dairy products off our plates. Instead, chow down on some yummy vegan alternatives, and remember: A rat is a pig is a dog is a boy.
