You know how once the holiday season hits, your days just become a blur of eating maple syrup–covered spaghetti and sugar disguised as cereal, spreading Christmas cheer, and shoveling cookie dough into your mouth until suddenly it’s December 23 and you’re gift-less and in a panic? Please tell me you’re pickin’ up what I’m putting down.
After YEARS of extensive research in and experience with this phenomenon, I bring you the solution to all your problems: DIY, broke-ass, animal-friendly gifts for everyone on your list.
Gifts for Fur Friends
DIY Vegan Pumpkin Dog Treats ♥
#PrincePixel went a li’l nuts for these bad boys. They are super-simple to make and will be the most-appreciated gift on your list. How to make your pup happy?
First, preheat the oven to 350°F. Then mix a mashed banana, 1/2 cup of canned pumpkin, 1/2 teaspoonful of cinnamon, 2 tablespoonfuls of agave syrup, 1 cup of oatmeal, and 1/4 cup of whole-wheat flour in a large bowl. Drop dollops of the mixture onto an ungreased cookie sheet and cook for 15 minutes. The pup will BEG, but wait for it to cool. Put it in a jar and take a snazzy pic before feeding it to the four-legged bestie in your life. ♥
With just three ingredients, this animal-friendly concoction will knock the holiday socks off your canine.
P.S. It’s human-friendly, too.
Aside from snuggles, scratching posts, and treats, catnip IS Christmas for the kitties. Don’t be a Grinch—make these cuties for your cutie:
Bulk Gifts for Bulk Friends
Everyone is enchanted by a fire, big or small—and this soy-based DIY candle allows for your own creative touch. Vanilla or peppermint? Wax wick or crackling wick? You have some decisions to make.
So I’m on a Mason jar kick, but look how cute this is! Jars always win at gifts, no matter what.
For your friends with a dry wit and even drier skin, this easy, cheapie sugar scrub makes for a thoughtful gift.
LEAVE ME ALONE—MASON JARS ARE AWESOME! Just use a metallic permanent marker to write, “Firs, Not Fur,” and your own personal message, and you’ve got the perfect, cutest DIY gift.
For all you jar-haters … these taste bomb. All you have to do is microwave some vegan semi-sweet chocolate, roll some pretzels in the chocolate, and then roll in sprinkles, peppermint, cookies (anything, really!). Then let it dry on parchment paper overnight, and voilà! Perfection.
For the Special Ones
I LOVE THIS! You literally just need a mug, chalkboard paint, painters tape, and a brush, and you’re good to go. Write a cute animal rights message for an edgier and forever personable present.
Is your bestie just a li’l cat-obsessed? Give her these kitties that were actually born for the great outdoors.
You really don’t need much to make these hella trendy headbands. Help your friends find their inner animal and be adorable to boot.
DIY Animal Bookends
Since I’m a bookworm, this DIY project makes me giddy. It’s SO EASY. All you need is two plastic toys in the shape of your friend’s spirit animal (whattup, dollar store?), spray paint, super glue, and two large rocks. Just give each plastic animal two coats of paint, let it dry, and glue it to a rock (you can find some at your local hardware store). These are fab because you can personalize each one to your besties.
My mom let out a couple of Spanish curse words as she ate these. It doesn’t get more Christmas Story than a box of oooh, fuuudge. Watch out: This is gateway fudge.
As you can see, when you’re down to the wire at Christmas, resort to food and jars and don’t spend too much time deliberating. Wait for it … here comes the “C” word: commitment. The people you love will keep loving you even if your gift ends up like this:
If your friends are anything like you, sometimes the best gift you can give them is an out: “Aww, you don’t need to get me anything. Just try vegan for a week, and we’ll be square.”
