Need a reason NOT to eat eggs? How about the horrific suffering that chickens in the egg industry endure? In the egg industry, males and females are separated as babies. Since male chicks are useless to the egg industry, they are usually ground up ALIVE or suffocated in trash bags. Female chicks often have the ends of their sensitive beaks cut off with a hot blade and are treated as nothing more than egg-making machines.

More than 300 million hens are used by the U.S. egg industry every year. Often, five to 11 hens are crammed into tiny wire “battery” cages, which are stacked on top of each other, allowing pee and poop to fall down on birds in the lower cages. After about two years of misery, these young hens are sent to slaughter.

Luckily for us (AND chickens), egg replacements are easy to use and often much healthier than eggs. The following egg replacers can be used in everything from savory dishes to baking to whatever your heart desires:

1. Soda

5. 2 Tbsp. Instant Mashed Potato Mix

6. Half-Cup Mashed Ripe Bananas

This trick works perfectly in chewy, yummy baked goods like brownies and cookies. A half-cup = 1 egg.

7. 1/4 Cup Unsweetened Applesauce

This egg replacer is very easy and very popular because it can replace eggs, butter, AND oil in cookies, brownies, cakes, and muffins.

8. 2 Tbsp. Canned Tomato Paste

9. 1/4 Cup Puréed Tofu
