hungoverYa know, these things just happen: Maybe you have a sweet tooth for margaritas or adult apple juice hard cider, or maybe your weekend celebrations got a little bit out of hand. No matter how you got here, the hangover is real, and so are these vegan comfort cures:

1. Coffee plus an Anti-Inflammatory

Iced CoffeeIt’s the classic cure for hangovers with a no-animals-harmed twist! Get this: While you’re out on the town drinking away, a devilish chemical called “acetate” is being released into your body, which is what gives you that hangover headache. If you want to block this sucker, get caffeine into your system along with an anti-inflammatory (like a teaspoonful of turmeric, extra virgin olive oil, blueberries, or ginger). Be sure to stick to dairy-free creamer though, since milk products can cause inflammation … as well as death to countless cows.

2. Miso Soup

If your stomach is the true victim here, miso soup is fermented with good bacteria that’ll help regulate your tummy and—as an added bonus—rehydrate you at the same time. Note: Just make sure it’s vegan. Many miso soups use fish sauce or chicken broth.

3. Ginger

If you’re too nauseated to read any further, you need some ginger in your life, stat. Try ginger tea, candied ginger, or even pickled ginger (the kind that comes with sushi) for some relief. Or you can just mix 1/4 teaspoonful of powdered ginger into a glass of water and—down the hatch!—you’ll be getting some relief in no time.

 4. Fruit Smoothie

Ice Cream SmoothieCalling on our Raw Till 4 foodies: Bananas are a solid source of potassium and magnesium, which will help regulate your body’s water levels and put that headache to bed. Add coconut water for extra potassium and blueberries for some anti-inflammatory punch.

5. Blueberry Breakfast Quesadilla

easy fusion recipesIf the only way you eat blueberries is slathered in dairy-free cream cheese or fried between warm tortillas, then we say, go for it! Blueberries are a major superfood, even if vegan cream cheese—not so much.

6. Kombucha Tea

kombucha, healthy drinkMaybe the true secret to the kombucha trend is that everyone drinking it is hung over as heck. The good bacteria in this healthy drink can reverse the effects of last night’s not-so-healthy drinks, so drink up.

7. Tofu ScrambleStuffed PeppersComfort food can be the cure: Just scramble some tofu with broccoli, red peppers, and onions—these veggies contain cysteine, an amino acid that helps break down alcohol. Optional: Stuff tofu scramble into a pepper for the absolute best presentation on the worst of days.
