Mission: Tell Southern Methodist University to Leave Ponies Alone
Putting ponies through suffering ≠ school spirit. Tell Southern Methodist University (SMU) to stop exploiting a pony named Peruna IX for sports events! 🐴
Nine ponies (all named Peruna) have suffered as SMU mascots since 1932. Previous Perunas have been hit by a car and killed, died from blood poisoning after being kicked by a horse, and forced to work for decades without retirement. 😰 Peruna IX doesn’t have it any better—he’s been carted around to chaotic games for 10+ years with no end in sight.
Ponies are prey animals, so being thrust into a stadium with screaming crowds and bright lights must be stressful af. There’s no reason to exploit animals like this. If schools want their games to be safer and more exciting, costumed human mascots are always the move. They can lead cheers, do flips, and pump up the crowd—and most importantly, it’s their choice.
