Mission: Hey, Meijer: Live Fish Don’t Belong in Your Stores

When you’re in the checkout line at a supermarket, it’s natural to take a lil peek at what others are buying. Here’s what makes that experience unnatural: Seeing a live fish in someone’s cart. 😨

That’s right—Meijer, a supercenter chain in the Midwest, sells live fish as “pets,” even after hearing from PETA that fish always suffer in the pet trade.

PETA’s investigations into the “pet” industry have found that fish are kept in cramped bags that are stuffed into boxes stacked up high in massive warehouses. Fish are shipped to retailers all over the world, and many die before and during the trip. Plus, they’re often starved for several days during transport. Think about how scared and miserable you’d be if you were in this situation. 😢

Many shoppers who buy fish don’t know what they need to survive and thrive, like a regularly cleaned and super large tank with many gallons of water, a filtration system, temp-controlled water, caves and live plants for enrichment, and the companionship of other fish. 🐟🐟 Being deprived of all this often causes fish to suffer and die—and that’s if their guardians don’t get rid of them out of boredom.

Fish are smart and sensitive and can feel pain, but Meijer sells them as if they were loaves of bread. 😡
