Mission: This Roadside Zoo is a Death Trap—Help Get the Animals Out!

Spring River Park & Zoo is a death trap for the animals stuck there. Help get them out before it’s too late!

This shady roadside zoo, operated by the city of Roswell, New Mexico, keeps foxes, coatis, lemurs, and other animals in cramped, unsafe cages. 😢 Just how dangerous is the situation? Look at a few of the incidents that have gone down here:

  • An elk named Patty shattered her leg after getting trapped in a gap of fencing that staff didn’t know about and had to be euthanized.
  • A pack of wild dogs got through the roadside zoo’s flimsy fencing, which led to the death of four animals.
  • A bear and a beaver escaped their enclosures, and the beaver was never found.

Besides risking their safety, Spring River Park & Zoo makes life miserable for animals. Two bears named Sierra and Ursula have been stuck in a pit that looks like a Dark Ages dungeon for years. 😰 The roadside zoo got its hands on more animals, including three capybaras, who will be doomed to spend their days in agony unless we do something!

If you want these animals to enjoy the rest of their lives in safe, comfy habitats, ACT NOW. 🚨 Here’s what to do and how to earn 150 peta2 points from our Rewards Program:

1. Send polite comments to the Roswell City Council members urging them to get the animals transferred to reputable facilities. To contact them with one message, copy and paste this block of e-mail addresses in the “To” field of your e-mail:

[email protected][email protected], [email protected], [email protected][email protected], [email protected], [email protected]

You can use our sample letter, but remember that your own words are always more effective.

I’m writing to urge you to transfer the animals at Spring River Zoo to accredited facilities. Animals are suffering there because of dangerous, inadequate enclosures. Despite promises made years ago to improve conditions for them, nothing meaningful has been done—and some have died due to inadequate fencing and poorly maintained enclosures. Please allow the surviving animals to be transferred to accredited facilities that have the resources and expertise to care for them properly.

At an accredited facility, the animals could roam, climb, dig in soft earth, and forage for healthy food in a vast, safe habitat. They would never again be confined to dangerous cages, and they would receive the high-quality care that they deserve.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,

[Name]
